  1. Sadly this isn't anything new. In the 60s two big-budget musicals which were intended to launch franchises died at the box office: "Doctor Dolittle" and "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang". While both films are cult classics today they did not come up to expectations when initially released and the toy store merchandise didn't move. (In those days franchise meant toy sales- not sequels.)
