Why join the US army when you get paid better in the civillian world? This is the norm for the US during periods of peacetime and low unemployment (3.8%, 5% is considered full employment) since it went to an all volunteer system.

If the t90 can operate in ukraine so can the m1a2. The M1's weight only comes into play when crossing bridges. On the road or in open field, it's ground pressure that is the limiting factor, and the m1's ground pressure is almost the same as a t-90

It tracks. Ukrainian casualties go up and down, They were high in Feb through April, then went down with spikes where Russians were attacking, they go up again in september but their worst were during Feb through April. It's harder to track casualties among soldiers as the official numbers don't get released by either side though you can get a rough baseline from the social and news media obituaries. Easier to track the equipment losses as they leave a visible evidence weeks after. But to give and indication, Ukraine is losing 1 IFV/Tank for ever 4-5 that the Russians lose. Half the tanks/IFV's the Russians lost happened in the 4 months after September while most of the Ukrainian losses were between February and July.

@EbonyPope Attack Helicopter Pilots are considered "front line" there are female helicopter pilots who fly AH-1's and AH-64's. On a similar vain truck drivers and supply personnel are not "front line" troops but some of them have seen more combat than some "front line" troops in the past 20 years.

@EbonyPope It's easier to carry it than to lift it. once it's on your back, your legs and back take up the weight. It becomes a question of the mass of the load, how it's packed (weight distribution) and how it's carried. This will likely require a different backpack frame for women just as they needed to design combat boots specifically for women. Something they did have they found that the men's boots that they were issuing to female soldiers and Marines were the cause of many of their leg and foot injuries.

@Kaldigiz Kiev was the Russian spelling since the 1800's when they were actively suppress everything not Russian. This continued through the USSR times as they did not want any challenges to the state. When the USSR fell, Ukraine opted not to join Russia's new whatever they wanted to call it, and the Ukrainian government re-asserted it's Ukrainian spelling in an effort to re-establish their old identity separate from the one imposed by the Russian Czars and later the USSR.

Is the US at war? Last I checked the US was coming off from a 20 year war with an economy with fairly low unemployment. good luck trying to meet recruitment and retention with those factors in play.

@Bendis. A tank, though the Bradley can kill one using it's TOW missiles, it has a twin launcher on the side of it's turret and a couple of reloads in the infantry compartment.

@willbass2869 True, a grunt with a TOW can kill a tank, but the tank with it's IR and multi power optics and heavy machine guns and cannon can kill the infantryman as he tries line up that shot. A number of Ukrainians AGTM teams died when the cannon rounds from the BMP's and BTR that they were trying to kill reached them before they could launch their own missile. Then there is the infantry squad that is supposed to be traveling with the tank providing an infantry screen, their job is to find the ATGM team and kill them or at least warn the tank and their IFV

In the real world on Feb 28 2022 Ukraine had less than 200k personel (army, navy and air force) with about 100k paramilitary. Half it's planes were grounded due to lack of spare parts. It's tanks were in a similar state of disrepair.

@357_SWAGNUM_MAGA_X yeah the primary services need to figure out its human resource issues. Still one of the leading recruiting problem is the near full unemployment rate in the civilian market. The services need to find ways to retain their people. Stop forcing them out because they don't want to take a staff job or to be promoted to be a glorified gofer to a flag officer. Some pilots just want to be pilots.

I don't see the why they would have to chose between picking up wounded vs delivering ammo and supplies. You drive in with the ammo and supplies, deliver them and drive out with the wounded using the now empty trucks. This is common practice since the 1800's so I call BS on that particular claim.

Re trains of equipment, yeah not too many T-80's, a lot T-72's and T-62's. They tried to reactivate the MiG-29's that they had in storage and found that 80% of them were good only for scrap metal. Back in 2009, Sputnik published that 70% of the active MiG-29's in the Ru AF were not airworthy. Seems that storage did not help.

The real question is, can they support them? Right now, it is questionable if the Russian logistics can support 150,000 man force. During the first month of the war, their front line units only got 1/2 the supplies they needed, thus you had vehicles with no gas. In Kherson, the loss of the bridges doomed ended any hope of holding the area never mind advancing further west. So assuming the 300k boosts the total numbers up to 450k maybe the Russians will have a combat force of about 150k. If the Russians don't use the bulk of those new conscripts to bring their logistics up to where it needs to be, by this time next year, we'll be talking about the Russian withdrawal from Crimea by way of the Kerch Strait Bridge

Ahh, the Ukrainians have not been using the southern roads to supply Bakhmut for months. Also that mud in the trench and the mud that the Ukrainian vehicles are getting stuck it? The Russians have the same thing in their trenches and have to go through the same thing when they try to cross through the open farmland between their lines and the Ukrainian lines. The only place without too much mud is the road, where every single available artillery piece and ATGM is pointed at.

@filmandfirearms virtually all of those Russian occupied areas were from the 1st 3 months of the war. And the Russians have lost about 50% of the territory they had taken from Feb 24 to May 31 2022. Since then they have moved forward a net 500 sq miles in 18 months. In the meantime the Russian navy has abandoned the naval base that was the reason they invaded Crimea in 2014.

These guys will have the same experience as those guys who drove across the border and did not realize that they were already in Ukraine until someone told them or the first bullets started flying over their heads.

DOD analysis is based on numbers How many troops does Russia have in Ukraine now or supporting the war in Russia They know that those Russian troops have about 1/4-1/2 the support (ammunition, fuel, spare parts, food ect) that they need to function. Now take the number of the mobilized troops (300k) subtract for casualties and replacements and the troop deficits from the existing force. What's left from that you now divide by 3 and what's left is the total combat force number you add to the existing 190-200k that you started the invasion with.

Re CAS in Ukraine, the reason for it's lack of effectiveness is because the SAM's were not destroyed, something the US learned to do back in the 70's and 80's and showed to great effect in the 90's. Use stealth aircraft to knock out EW and C3 units, followed seconds after with an assault on SAM and AAA units by other stealth aircraft, helicopters and anything else that with wings, an engine and can carry a bomb. Repeat as needed until enemy air defense network is rendered, well dead. Then send in the tanks, mech infantry with CAS on hand and Wild Weasels and ecm birds to deal with any surviving SAM threats.

@combatwombat2134 I forget which, but one of the news organizations tracked the social media and local news sites (obits and announcements) close to the base of one of the units that was fighting in Ukraine. Seems that almost 1/2 the regiment was reported injured or in the obits or had death/funeral notices on social media. Don't know if that unit was reconstituted or pulled back home.

Re using civilian 4x4's. Back in WW2 the British Army used 4x4's, fast trucks, jeeps, cars to raid German positions deep behind the German lines. The units that took part of that raids would become the 1st SAS Regiment.

Unlike Russians, storage in the US means you actually keep the machines in working order, moving them every few weeks to prevent flat spots in the tires, gaskets and seals and keep the cooling and lubrication system in working order

There are Russian NGO's tracking the numbers via visits to graveyards, unit and personal social media death announcements and local news sites and obituaries. So far, they're confirmed that the number of Russian KIA is about 2x what the Kremlin has said they were, they are not including the deaths that were released by Ukrainian sources which get their info from the ID's and personal papers of the bodies of the Russian soldiers they have recovered and buried or are keeping in storage.

@Ander P if you look at the arms Ukraine exported, all of it were Russian kit made locally. I know Moscow loves to play up Ukrainian corruption, but seriously, there are no cases of Ukrainians stripping their own vehicles of ERA and filling them with wood. And we found plenty of that with the Russian vehicles, heck even the government publicity admitted that massive portions of defense spending was being stolen.

@67wouter Feb 12-19, reports coming out of Belarus that Russian soldiers are selling their diesel among other war materials. A few days later those same troops were on their way south heading for Kyiv. That's a sign of an army that is rotten from the generals on down.

The fuel theft involved thieves stealing from a contractor, and not sailors selling the fuel, it was discovered when a sentry caught them while they were trying to leave the base. Reports indicate the driver was an employee of the contractor. Come on that took me 30 seconds to find.

@zivaradlovacki2666 Yep, Rule of Thumb, numbers of enemy will always be inflated, while your own will be close to the truth or reduced. Russians inflate Ukrainians casualties while downplaying their own and the Ukrainians do the same. The US DOD and UK try to play it straight so what they say is mostly right, mostly because Western reporters have a habit of getting the data anyway.

@thehawk8486 They are higher than the Ukrainians want, mostly because they start out with fewer of them than the Russians did. But between Ukraine and various EU countries repairing and putting back in service damaged vehicles and new equipment they are staying ahead of the losses.

@thegreatsun6571 Well, all of those vehicles and equipment are rotting away in storage costing us more and more money just to keep them usable. So we get rid of them by sending them to Ukraine, if they lose them, we have hundreds more to send them. Meanwhile we save on storage and maintenance costs that no longer have to be paid, and we have space for the new procurement.

@gags730 Russian logistics have been lacking, they don't have enough trucks to get the supplies from the rail head to the troops. Per Ukrainian experience, they need 3 times the number they have now to support the current troop levels. To support another 100,000 combat troops, they will need 300,000-400,000 support troops, so 480,000-600,000 troops just to get 120,000 combat troops, to overcome 40,000 Ukrainian combat troops.

@Gags must be why the Russians ran out of gas while attempting to take Kyiv. Logistics is why Russia does not occupy Kyiv, Chernihiv or Sumy, Kherson and Dudchany. 75km. That's how far a Russian unit can be from its supply base and still receive daily supplies. Beyond that it's 1 day worth of supplies every 2 days. And looking at the unit tables, they only have 1/4 the trucks they need.

@Kaunis Kaukomieli during the gulf War the US Army flew fuel ahead of the tank formations and set up gas stations for the advancing tank formations. And the ammo issue during DS seems to be more of the supply unit not knowing where the receiver was because they had moved already.

@zuveja Since the start of the Russian winter offensive, the rate of visually confirmed Russian equipment losses has doubled. The Urainian losses have gone up but at 1/3 that of Russian losses. So the price that the Russians paying for every sq/km every block is much higher than what the Ukrainians are paying for it. And it's not even affecting the Ukrainian troop build-up as they are not committed to the fight.

Re Belarusian/Russian Troops hiding in the forests bordering Ukraine and Belarus. NATO recon aircraft can see tanks as far as 350km away and aircraft much further than that. US satellites cover pretty much every foot of the Ukrainian border.

@mezjean5966 Because in any war, you lose equipment regardless of how well you fight. So the Ukrainian Armed Forces need a steady stream of new equipment to replace losses, then it needs 2x as much to be able to increase it's available forces in order to go on a proper offensive.

As for Ukraine it was a mixed bag as some of the mobilized had just done stints fighting in Donbass, others got a crash course in basic infantry training, and still others showed up with their own gun and kit after the Ukrainian army told them to come back in a week after a slot opened.

Yeah, Russians are not doing deep assaults, not after the fiasco at Kyiv. They are not operating aircraft past the FEBA and when they are in it, they are flying below 200ft above the deck. Their fighters are staying high and east outside the engagement range of the Ukrainian Ground Air Defenses.

The longest helicopter assault during this war so far was on the 1st week and Russia sent helicopter borne troops to the outskirts of Kyiv. They captured the airports but were forced to retreat towards their armor which drove south from Bellarus. They later recaptured the two airfields north of Kyiv and thus the encirclement of Kyiv began.

@freedomordeath89 Just saying, the Russians did do long range helicopter assaults early in this war. They did eventually capture their objectives after losing it, and they were able to cut off the western supply route to Kyiv. Ultimately they simply ran out of supplies as their supply convoys could not bring up enough to supplies and reinforcements to complete their mission of taking Kyiv and they and the entire northern force were forced to retreat back into Russia and Belarus.

Because Russian reaction time is down right slow? It sometimes takes as much as 2 days between seeing something and acting on it. And they can't mass artillery anymore. any large grouping shows up and it can get plastered by HIMARS and guided artillery.

Are you seriously doubting that the US Army had a lower death rate than the Iraqi's during Desert Storm? Seriously? A war where a Iraqi tank battalion got mauled by a Marine HQ company armed with LAV's and LAW's? where said LAV's chased the surviving Iraqi armor for 4 miles? Chased, not rand from, the leathernecks chased them as the Iraqi's retreated, stopping only to reload their LAV's 20mm cannons. Where M1 Tanks and M2 Bradleys picked off something like 160 Iraqi tanks and 180 IFV's while losing a single Bradley? Seriously the Russians thus far have shown themselves to be pretty close to the Iraqi level of competence.

@lucks4fools978 eventually. Russian response time for a good atrtillery is 3-5 minutes, but more often it's 30 minutes and up. Accuracy depends on the availablity of drones and if there isn't something in the area that can knock down that drone like an SPAA gun or a MANPADS. With a drone they can adjust for moving targets, without the drone, (downed or jammed) they will hit somewhere within a city block.

When you calculate the combat range of an aircraft, divide the one way range by 3. This gives you the fuel to go to the target, attack/fight in full burner, return to base with 5-10 min of fuel, and in the case of carrier aviation, 15 minutes of fuel is often needed just to get back aboard the boat

@mbaxter22 If it hits the top of the turret, it will kill the tank and crew, trick the Ukrainians found by accident is that camo nets will catch the missile and keep the contact fuse from hitting the tank and thus the missile does not explode, and just hangs there, like a fly on a spider's web. So ideally you set up the reinforced camo net at a preplanned firing position, drive the tank or arty in, shoot a couple of rounds, move to the next position and repeat.

That means out of the 300k, 200k will be needed to support troops, leaving 100. there are 200k in the field getting 1/2 the supplies they need, that means to get their supply deliveries up to parity, they need to use the remaining 100 as supply troops. leaving them with a net gain of zero combat troops.

At peak production, the US build 800+ M1A2's per year but that requires a multi year contract as the factory has to hire and train people and pre order large batches of parts from 3rd parties

The sound of the torpedo propellers can be heard for miles and the torpedo takes as much as 2 minutes to reach its target which would be deploying countermeasures and firing torpedoes on a return bearing.

@John_Pace I seem to recall a Ukrainian river crossing behind Russian lines in Kherson. The Russian counter attack failed and the crossing held. The Russians opened dams to flood the land hoping to slow down the Ukrainians, it did but the Russians forgot that without a dam down stream, the flooding was temporary and the Ukrainians expanded their foothold until other Ukrainian units attacking from the NE linked up with them and forced the entire Russian line to move South East.
