I've owned cars since the 1980's Number of times i've had to replace a manual transmission , 0 Number of times I've had an automatic transmission fail to the point that I had to replace them 4

@rberding Nissan Leaf battery replacement cost is now at $8,500, Tesla's battery packs I think cost 12,000-15,000

@slowcarguy4808 A Chrysler minivan, Datsun 210 and a 2005 Corolla. Note 2 of those cars are damned near bulletproof. I've also owned a Honda Accord and a Toyota FX16 with 5 spd manuals.

@jwatson181 It was the natural gas that failed, not the renewables, the renewables were actually producing more electricity than they expected under the circumstances but they could not deliver it because the grid was shut down.

You think they will suddenly say that they were able to increase the energy density by 500%??

Heh, I had an 80 Honda Accord with the CVCC motor, loved it and racked up 300,000 miles on it.

@robertatkins272 In the days following February's deadly Texas blackouts one thing became clear: A big reason people lost power is because natural gas was not getting to power plants. - KUT 90.5 Equipment essential to the production, processing and transport of gas failed in the freeze, leaving power plants starved for fuel and the state starved of power. Electric demand for heat across the state was soaring, as expected, but green dots on the corner state map started flipping to red. Each was a regional power generator, and they were spontaneously shutting down — three coal plants followed quickly by a gas plant in Corpus Christi. - Bloomberg News Many of Texas power producers did not winterize so when the cold hit, the controls froze and the power plants that used gas and coal could not get fuel.

How much better would your braking be without the weight of the compressed air, it's container and the 1000lb or more of battery?
2
@nickherman311 and all combined weigh less than the battery of an EV that has 80% of the range of the gas powered car.
2
@fast.biking_freddy Maybe just Canada or Alaska, Wisconsin and such.

Uses radar to "see" cars that are in front of the car ahead of you and yet the Tesla Autopilot can't see a parked firetruck.

@danthelambboy 1 on a car that i drove 300 miles a day 5 days a week 54 weeks a year for 5 years.

@chodkowski01 You can change out the clutch 5-8 times for what it costs to rebuild an automatic transmission. 500-2500 to replace a clutch (price depends on the car) vs 1800-4000 to rebuild an automatic transmission

Noel Pytlik you know that after you buy that car and fully pay for it, you still don't own it.

Considering that the Model 3's 75kw battery pack weighs over 1,000lbs and the one they are expected to use are essentially 2 battery packs. That means that the chasis, body, hardware and electronics of the car weighs less than 800lb??? For comparison the body of a lotus elise is about 500lb with the entire care coming in at about 1,500lb Yeah I suspect the Tesla will weigh about 4,000lb or more.

Using a smaller motor less powerful motor also means you reduce your power consumption and thus you can either reduce the size (weight) of your battery and have a lighter car which in turn needs a smaller motor to have the same performance.

@robertatkins272 ahh, those got shut down too as they feed into the system that shut down.

Looking at that I think you can still install 19 inch wheels in a Tesla Model 3 and still not run into clearance issues. There are even 18 inch wheels that will fit. This would allow you to install higher profile tires with taller sidewalls and the lighter weight of the wheels and tire package should improve the performance of the car. There is just that lip that you may have to machine into the wheel.

Torque multiplication??? More like the torque converter slips until it can catch up to the engine.

@0ooTheMAXXoo0 which track races?
1
@Cerberus984 Pike's peak is not as great a challenge as you would think given the relatively short distance, keep in mind the current record holder is a VW with a motor that's about the size of the one's used in a Nissan Leaf and just enough batteries to get it up the mountain. A better test would be the Dalton Highway or the North Dakota highways in winter.
