@zaco-km3su At best he'd retire as a Rear Admiral or request his final assignment to be the CO of Naval Aviation Warfighting Development Center (NAWDC) the command that the Navy Fighter Weapon School (department N7) is part of. That gets on his retirement and out of the Navy's hair and let's him fly as often as he wants.

Back when the Navy was working out tactics to fight the MiG-23, they had a pair of F-14's fight 5 F-4's. In the ensuing fight, one F-14 ended up fighting 4 F-4's 100 ft off the desert floor (that's where the "watch the mountains" in the original movie came from). After the flight the F-14 crew was verbally, loudly dressed down. The F-4 crews were in the room looked at each other and the F-14 crew, shrugged their shoulders then all the pilots and RIO's left to get drinks.

The space shuttle crew were alive when their cockpit broke up 100,000ft above where the movie's darkstar was flying at.

@Nghilifa yes. But to achieve m10, you need to go high. About 100,000-150,000ft. The air is less dense and you have to go faster to just stay in the air. You might be going m10, but your indicated airspeed indicator would show just 450 knots.
