@mizinoinovermyhead.7523 The F-14? The wings sweep is controlled by a computer that moves it to match what it considers to be the right wing sweep for the conditions. There is a manual overide that the pilot can use to force the wing to sweep, that can be done at any airspeed.

@82dorrin No, a large portions are still WVR even if when they use BVR missiles. BTW have you flown DCS? If you do, you'll notice that things get to 10 miles really quickly. That's because the players/pilots are doing everything they can to break the radar locks and close the distances in order to give their missiles the best chance at killing their targets. That means chaff, beaming the enemy radar, using terrain (hills and mountains) to block the enemy radar while closing the distance. And with the stealth mods, WVR is even more common as pilots are forced to close within 30 miles to get a lock, 5-10 miles to get a missile shot.

@mizinoinovermyhead.7523 375-425 knots is where the F-14 turns best if my memory serve me right. At that speed, it would out turn an F-16. And at 450-600 knots and up, she could pull 9g though don't tell the brass. Buy yeah, according to the old F-14A drivers, most just left the wings on auto sweep, and flew with the throttle at full military or in afterburner during a fight. They would move the throttle more in the B/D since that tolerated the repeated fuel flow changes more.

@mizinoinovermyhead.7523 No, you are describing it right. Thing is the wings sweep faster than the plane accelerates. The fastest accelerating fighter in the US inventory does not accelerate faster than 1.2g. and the wings on the F-14 don't need to sweep back until above 450 knots.
