@DownieLive And that's with oil prices at 1/2 of it's peak. Oil is at $57 per barrel, that's 2019 dollars, in 2018 it was at $64.90 and it was $110 a barrel in 2011 or $122/barrel in 2019 dollars. That means much of what your paying for are taxes and profit.

It would be better to put a 2 spd gearbox, low gear for sporty riding, high gear for eco/max range mode. This same gear selector would change the battery power output mode. This will increase your range on a single charge by anywhere from 15% to 50%.

@DownieLive The single gear still means that at 65mph you're range is lower than if you were running at 35mph. That's because the electronic "eco" mode only regulates the power output, not the rotation of the wheels per rotation of the engine. A 2 speed gearbox, solves that issue so with the it in "high gear" the motor turns as many rpm as it would at 35mph but the wheels will be turning revs for 65mph. Simple, lightweight no muss on fuss. It would probably add less weight than a second battery and probably cost less too.

@Planclanman3 Not exactly no maintenance. Less maintenance for the motor, sure but not 0 maintenance. All of the parts aside from the motor and transmission still need maintenance. Brakes, belt, wheel bearings, tires and so on. And the motor may or may not need lubrication and and maintenance, it still has bearings and that motor is spinning faster than any ICE motor. Most of the failed electric motors I've had to repair started with a bearing that was no longer lubricated.
