I agree. At least Vietnam was salvaged afterwards. The communist government largely dropped all the hardline pretenses and they mended diplomatic relations with America and have also embraced more free market economic policies. Plus, they have maintained their anti-CCP stance since and are one of America's allies against China. Afghanistan never had any chance in hell of becoming a modern state or even sustainable for nation building. It was a fools errand to even try.

@scallen3841 Exactly. Also, Afghanistan is literally just a pile of dirt with nothing resource-wise or even a stable geography or climate for development. It was always going to fall back primitive Islamism.

Trump already had a withdrawal date and military protocol set up for safe removal of US troops and Afghan contractors and also to ensure the compliance of the Taliban during the process. biden reneged on all that simply because he didn't want to give the orange man credit.

@justjoking5841 Honestly, China is welcome to the place. They will suffer the same fate as all the other countries that tried before them. As for Afghanistan under China, at this point, history has shown that the "country" has only ever being stable (even if temporary) when under the suzerainty of another power. Heck! The actual citizens kept voting for sharia and the taliban rule.
