The History Guy: History Deserves to Be Remembered

Thanks for making this video. They were a truly impressive African kingdom and had great warriors but one thing I absolutely appreciate is how you didn't gloss over the fact that they were heavily involved in the slave trade and were pretty brutal about it. As a Nigerian, it always feels good to hear an objective analysis of African history. Most current "historians" just ignore that fact that many African kingdoms played a huge role in the institution of slavery and they try to make it into a one-sided European affair. Thanks for not being like those people.

@scottabc72 It may be getting widely discussed in Africa but sadly not in the west. Heck! When I tell people that the British actually played a huge role in ending slavery in many parts of Africa (my country included) they automatically assume I am lying even when I present them with historical facts. Sadly, a good portion of western education tends to be dominated by ideologues who don't care for objective coverage of history.

@shaneabrahamson8732 "why are black folk asking for money from white folk?" Good question. Why? We in Africa are not asking for money from anyone (except in weird countries like Zimbabwe and South Africa), not the Arabs or the whites or other blacks who all took part in slavery here. The Balkans are not asking money from the Turks despite the Ottoman empire enslaving them. So why the whole notion of reparations anyway?

@loke6664 well said. All most of us want is more objective discourse and analysis of history.

@scottabc72 Oh, Americans do get a lot of education on European imperialism in Africa but it is a largely one-sided education on the affair. They are ignorant of Arab imperialism and how slavery was present long before the Europeans got here. They even disregard the fact that slavery-though the Europeans partook in it- largely came to an end thanks to the Europeans (French and British, mainly). How many Americans know that Mauritania was the last African country to abolish slavery...in 2007 long past colonialism? They also disregard how a lot of the foundations of many modern African nations, especially in terms of infrastructure, national identity (imperfect as it is), access to modern technology and socio-economic systems like capitalism, are a result of European imperialism. A good portion of Africa's problems do stem from colonialism but more of them also stem from geography, climate and tribalism and they have largely mitigated and even removed in some cases (Botswana) thanks to the systems left by the Europeans and the good leadership of the African countries that used them.

@scottabc72 Why is that such a shocking thing? I am Nigerian, born and raised. I also happen to read a lot of history and watch a lot of western media and I actually have travelled to North America. It's reasonable to assume I would know a thing or two about American culture and education.

@whayes8084 self hatred, how exactly?
13
@whayes8084 Yeah, corrupt African politicians giving concessions to China is not the same as African people giving away resources to China. I suppose you think Americans willingly let all their industries and jobs be outsourced and offshored to China too?

@shelbybrown8312 sad but true.

@RestInFreedom Look, you clearly have issues on your chest. Where in my original comment did I say or insinuate that colonialism was wholly good? I just said I was glad this video didn't gloss over the atrocities and acts of cruelty that the Dahomey Kingdom was known for, and much of Africa, even prior to colonialism. Slavery was cruel, regardless of who or which side did it but most westerners tend to over focus on the European side of it and even excuse it when Africans perpetrated it. I am glad this video didn't do that. What does any of that have to do with the Congo or the atrocities committed there by Leopold of Belgium?

@whayes8084 but aren't you black, yourself?🤔

@sherylcascadden4988 very good points you make.

@Native Youtuber I'm confused. So because I am being objective with regards to the Dahomey, historically, I am being bad? Did I not mention how they were slavers and brutal ones at that, along with my acknowledgement of their impressive kingdom? When historians discuss the Mongols don't they mention both how they committed mass murder along with how they established the silk road and increased trade? What exactly is wrong with my comment then? Also, I seriously hope you aren't insinuating that I support the evil things the Dahomey did.

@vitalaliu8604 whatever you say, friend🤣🤣

@tonylupone1157 But the aboriginals are not in Africa.

@Tyee234 Yeah, it was not initially due to altruism on the part of teh French and British. It was mainly a way to increase their sphere of influence but considering how much money teh British and French both spent to police the seas around Africa and free slaves from Ottoman boats and local African raids, I doubt it was not partly selfless. ANd also, teh end results show it was a righteous thing.

@meliaj1228 Yes, they were black women. Not sure why that is in doubt. But they were also brutal slavers and killers.

@hughsmith7668 Oh, I don't deny it and I don't condone it (most of us don't) but I am also not beholden to it. I am not responsible for what my ancestors did.

@MrCeora yeah, yeah. Whatever you say. Apparently only white people can have these opinions, to you. Whatever you say.
