1:03 Rudyard, while my country (Nigeria) may trade a lot with China, we are not a strong Chinese ally. They rejected us for BRICS membership (mainly due to our stronger western ties) and when the USA and other G20 members offered us a more solid membership, we gladly took it. We are actually more aligned with the west than many people realize. We have stronger diplomatic, military and economic ties with the west. Heck! We also have a long-standing relationship with India. China is an major economic partner for us but not a strong geopolitical one.

@feliz2892 yeah, you would think so but in terms of actual policy and outlook, both the north and south are more allied with our allies here. Regardless of party changes, the geopolitics of Nigeria tends to be fairly uniform. Thus, we still maintain ties with the west. This is mainly due to closer proximity to Europe and our socioeconomic, political and cultural history with the British and others, which makes us more aligned with them. Plus, for security in the unstable north and maritime south, we tend to prefer working with the Americans and Europeans for weapons and training and security detail. Even during military rule, our ties to the west were maintained. Former president buhari was the only one who tried to change this by trying to make us more of a Chinese ally mostly so that he could leverage more cheap Chinese loans for his failed projects and that didn't go well and just indebted us.

@feliz2892 Finally, to address the demographic issue you raised, yes, the Muslim population is looking to become slightly higher than us Christians but that is not really as dire as you would think. Thankfully, islam here is not nearly as regressive as Arabic Islam. You will find more Muslims here who support democracy, nationalism, capitalism, education, and abhor regressive practices. They have to in order to maintain our nationak unity with Christians. Here, culture and tribe factors more than religion. A southern Muslim is more secular and open minded than a rural northern Muslim. Also, structure of our politics and judiciary has secularism enshrined in our public affairs. For example, our military is mostly composed of Northerners and Muslims but it is barred from letting anybfaith or tribe influence it. Civic Nationalism has become more dominant over time here. So the notion of Nigeria becoming a Sharia state or another Sudan is not likely. Also, though our largely Muslim north is still underdeveloped in terms of economics, infrastructure and education, this is changing gradually and with this change comes a more moderate culture. Look at Kano, Abuja and Kaduna. They are northern and largely Muslim but also modernized and more urban. This is making them more on par with some southern states in terms of culture and perspective.

@logangriffin7957 in Africa, it is likely. Obviously not in all of Africa but it is more likely in some of Africa, especially us coastal west African countries and Eastern Africa. I mean, we have the good metrics: Young and educated and cheap labor force, proximity to developed regions, historical and economic ties, resources, relatively stable political outlook, and socioeconomic foundations. We are likely going to take the current route Mexico undertook to get to its improved state. It will obviously not happen overnight but it is already happening. The infrastructure issue you bring up must be addressed. I agree there.

@adamnesico yeah, we are a Frankenstein country but so are/were many nations. Heck! India has managed to remain united despite the cultural, religious and language diversity there. Eventually, civic nationalism grows and a national identity is established. We are certainly not a perfect country but we do have many things going on that show unity is improving. We have a singular national language in English. Secularism is more enshrined in our public affairs and more of our institutions. Finally, majority of our elite and citizenry now have a shared interest in keeping our nation united for social, political and economic reasons. I mean, many Igbo people don't support Biafra secession but do support more federalism here. Same as many northerners not supporting separation due to economic reliance on the south and the threat of insecurity that they can't handle without our country. I'd say we are following the frame of Mexico and India for nation building.

@MJC1891 oh, I'd say they are growing quite strong. I mean, my government recently bought a billion dollars worth of military helicopters from them to bolster our military in combating terrorism here. Aside from that, we do have a good history of relations with the USA.

@adamnesico 🤣🤣 Nice one! Well, in all fairness, our North has a pretty sizable Francophone feel what with our proximity to Niger, Mali, and Chad.

@daybyday3840 Oh, look at you. what an original jab🤣 Yeah, average IQ in Nigeria and much of Africa was not very high for years but that is not exactly anything new or surprising. It was the same for much of Eastern Europe during the Soviet era, rural western Europe, and South and East Asia for decades. What changed was increased funding for education, better economic development and opportunities, and the advent of technology. Same thing is happening here to us. As our countries get more economically, socially developed and politically stable, education improves and so does economic development and IQ rises. So maybe think of another insult😮‍💨

@gg_rider hi. Sorry for the late response. Yes, the insecurity situation has gotten worse here, especially in the North. This is mainly due to economic mismanagement from our current ruling party and the political and social instability in other Sahel countries that border us, like Niger, Mali, Chad, Burkina Faso and others. While the targeting of Christian communities here is a sad reality, the vast majority of the victims of these terrorists like Boko Haram, tend to be mostly Muslims in rural areas who get kidnapped and held for ransom, sold into slavery or just killed. This just shows that these animals are very indiscriminate in who they target. Even some Fulani herdsmen bandits tend to target mainly other Muslim farming communities here.
