As a Nigerian, my respect for the British in their remaining defiant and not acquiescing to the whining of lefty Argentinian politicians is immense. Respect and never give up your sovereignty over the Falklands.

@SeeLasSee Regarding our population growth issue, It is a double-edged sword. On one hand, it means we have a healthy replacement level and a large young and largely literate population that can be attractive for industries to use our cheap labor. That being said, due to the ineptitude of our current government, infrastructure still lags behind and this continues to hinder our economic development and growth. So our large population is becoming a burden. Seriously, i cannot stress how important sane and sensible leadership is for any country, especially developing ones.

Just to point one thing out: Argentina is a largely white country, and the whitest in South America. Their failing is due to their terrible socio-economic systems e.g. Peronism (cancer). Chile is not as white and yet they are one of the richest and most politically stable countries in the region. What makes a society great is having good socio-economic policies and leadership.

@Muck006 I fully agree with this. In my country, our last ruling political party (PDP) were mostly right-wing neo-liberals who were nationalists and pro-private sector. The current ruling party (APC) is left-leaning and has caused so much ethnic strife and disunity and also known for their "pan-Africanism" Needless to say, our country went downhill as soon as they came to power.

@MrLolguy93 right on the money, friend. Britain is the reason why slavery was abolished in what became my country. Even though they were colonialists, one thing they mandated was an end to slavery. First, it started in the south where they deposed various chiefs who practiced it (eve my ancestors were among them) then, they defeated the Sokoto caliphate in the north and forced them to reduce their slavery (they didn't go far enough there) but yes, historically, the British were the ones who abolished slavery here. Yes, they partook in it for a time but it was here long before they ever arrived and they did the most to end it.

@pequi7 Yes. And they were never claimed by Argentina prior. So how is this bad exactly?

@DonnyStanley Thanks for that but I have developed a serious revulsion to politics and I really wouldn't do well since our political system is not geared for young and less well-off individuals to gain office. It does happen but not as frequent as in the west. So our political class is a very exclusive one. My passion lies more in business. I honestly see entrepreneurship as the way to solving many of our problems in Nigeria and Africa and that is why I usually advocate for politicians here who understand this. I know it looks pathetic to want positive change for my country but be unwilling to try make change politically but the reality here is that it is hard for average people like me to do so. There is still hope in our opposition party. Though they have their many issues, they have a better track record of solving many issues in our country's history and they are known for being more economically liberal and more nationalist (i.e less of the divisive ethnic tribalism we see with the current ruling party) and they look to win majorly in the national elections next year.

@ThermicLight Yeah, i know the British empire had slavery. And so did the Sokoto Caliphate, the Benin empire, The kingdom of Dahomey, Ottoman empire, Greater Zimbabwe etc. The British empire was the exception in that they ended slavery by force or diplomacy. They could have continued it like all the others but they didn't. I also know they didn't end slavery solely out of humanitarian reasons. So what? The fact that they ended it despite no serious moral reason, makes them better than every other empire or kingdom or place that practiced and still continues to practice slavery today. If you want to waste your time virtue-signaling or campaigning against slavery, why not focus on China, the middle east, north Africa etc, instead of wasting time talking about the British of the past?

@ThermicLight Well, they did go to war with Zanzibar and defeated the Sultanate there and freed hundreds of African slaves. There are photos if you doubt. Sure, they did it for their own benefit and to maximize their control of naval trade routes in East Africa but the point still stands. This is also one of many historical examples. I never called the British empire a saintly empire that did no wrong. They just did more good than most other empires. They did more to end slavery than any other empire, kingdom or people.

@NorthernObserver That actually makes a great deal of sense. it also explains why places where Germans and English settled or developed tend to do better than places where the Spanish or Portuguese settled.

@ThermicLight Okay, friend. It is clear that this is more of an emotional issue for you rather than a logical discussion. You clearly have a personal vendetta against the British for some reason I don't know. All you keep doing is listing bad actions of the British empire despite my prior acknowledgement that they were not a wholely good empire but they just did more good than most others. Plus, rather than criticize current practice of slavery going on around the world, you still focus on the part the British did. I understand. It's easier to complain about past problems than to address current ones. So I get what you are doing but it is still pathetic.

@ThermicLight This is not about hypocrisy. It's about being objective with history, regarding the British empire during its time and in comparison to other kingdoms and powers before and after it. That is why I am not calling them a good empire but I am also not condemning them outright because they did more good retrospectively and during their time. As for your weird example of nazi germany and communism compared to the British empire, that is strange. The former two were absolutely evil even by objective metrics and even despite being around for less time than the British empire. They resulted in more harm and less benefit for any society impacted by them compared to the British empire. The same way the Achaemenid Persian empire did some bad things but were much better than the Assyrian empire before them. That is called being objective.

@ThermicLight But I already stated that the British empire was not wholesome and that they also did bad things. I just state that that is not the only thing they did during their time. Being objective means covering all sides of things. Have I not done that?
