Russia is a BIG cautionary tale on why you NEVER EVER allow communism or socialism to take root in your country/society. it may give you a boost initially, like steroids, but overtime it will have enormous side-effects and cripple you in the long run. Pre-soviet Russia was industrializing and liberalizing. The incompetence of the Tsar, notwithstanding , Russia was on par to become an economic power house with a high and increasingly literate population, healthy birth rates, vibrant culture and thriving arts, burgeoning private sector and increasing industry. All that was erased when th soviets seized power destroyed Russia and eastern Europe forever. The same thing has begun to happen in China.

@onlyagermanguy yeah....Having huge welfare state does not equal socialism. USA and Japan and Israel spend huge on welfare. Will you call them socialist? Germany and Denmark have robust private sectors, private ownership of property and means of production is not illegal and they use to be socialist until they got sensible and stopped it before it ruined their economies.
