As a Nigerian, here's my simple answer: Bad geography, poor social and economic systems, poor political systems, failing legal and social institutions, dutch disease, tribalism and others. Also, the colonialism excuse is just lazy and mainly used by tribalist Arabs as an excuse. Same way Pan-Africans use it as an excuse for Africa's failings.

@teeldd Then why are South Asian and South East Asian countries doing so well? Why are African countries like Kenya, Botswana, Namibia, Ghana and a few others doing well? Why are many South American countries and countries like Mexico doing well despite most having longer periods of colonialism?

@magicaljewels295 that is true. Religion does factor in but I still think culture and society matters more. I mean, the richest man in Africa (and Nigeria), Aliko Dangote, is a Muslim but he is an avid capitalist and does not promote Sharia law. The reason is that the culture and society he was raised in didn't forbid entrepreneurship or trade. Same thing with many Muslims here. Only the most remote and rural Muslim areas tend to have culture that opposes good business. Most Muslims are more on-line with us Christians on how business should be done.

@strpath6986 yes, and why? Because unlike most of the middle east, their societies and cultures embrace capitalism, entrepreneurship and are also more welcoming to the wider world and other creeds for trade and diplomacy. Their geography is also better.

As a fellow Nigerian, i absolutely agree. The issue with much of the north is largely cultural and some of Islam. In the south, we have many Muslims but their culture promotes nore tokerance and entrepreneurship and education. That's because during colonialism m, the British were more involved here and as a result, we rmbraced more of their systems like democracy and capitalism and westwrn education but the north was largeky left on their own and whike this led to more cultural maintenance, they didn't embrace the beneficial sysyems the British brought abd that's why their region is still developmentally lagging compared to ours. The oy two northern states doing well are Kano and Kaduna because they did embrace some of what the British brought and have been making genuine efforts to improve economically and socially.

@robertlimage7516 you make a good point. Plus, it's very similar to something my father told me when I was young. He said Africa's problem is not corruption but corruption that doesn't work. The west is also corrupt but they actually build and maintain infrastructure and make their economy, institutions and private sector work, unlike Africa.

You are no better than my fellow Africans who foolishly day all of our problems are because o colonialism and racism 😒

@quirkyangelxoxo lol, no😂 We have a pretty equal number of Christians and Muslims here but officially, we are a secular country. No religion has sway over our government policies or constitution.

We could have gotten much worse in terms of colonialism, like Arab colonialism and the effects as we see in Sudan today with Arab militias still enslaving and killing the indigenous black African people there😔

Yes. During the golden age under harun Al Rashid, Islam was more modernist, tolerant and excelled in academia, trade, science etc but backlash from orthodox rulers and imams caused this to stop while Christianity embraced progress and reforms. We believe that to understand the world brings us closer to God while Muslims believe to study the world is to question Allah.

@123danvc not entirely. It's mainly a cultural issue. Turkey is Islamic but managed to embrace modernity, democracy, capitalism, reform, some liberalism, and abandoned the regressive aspects of Islam. The middle east had this chance during their golden age of Harun al-Rashid but their orthodox Islamic elites push d back and stopped these changes and their region never recovered and never will.

@abdswitch7810 yes, and so what? This is not a very good excuse to fall back on. If colonialism was the only reason for countries being unstable or poor, Thailand and Ethiopia would be the richest and most developed and stable countries on earth.

TheGhost-kk7jj when I mentioned bad geography for the middle East, I mean the deserts, lack of sustainable rainfall, poor soil for agriculture and building (they literally have to import sand for concrete😮‍💨), lack of other resources besides oil, and many of their countries are land-locked. All of this has led to severe issues like poor urbanization, poor infrastructure and development, food and water insecurity, border skirmishes, terrorism, demographic issues, and economic hardship. We have problems in Africa with our geography but not to the level of the middle East.

@bonganikato3016 not necessarily. It's Arabic Islam and Arabic culture. Turkey is a Muslim country and they are far better culturally and economically than all Arab countries. Same thing with Indonesia.

@catmatism oh, no my friend. I purposely left it out cause it's Arabic culture that is the main problem. Turkey, Indonesia, Senegal, even much of Malaysia are largely Islamic but they have thriving capitalist economies, tolerance for other religions, embrace modernity, have democracy, and are not as...... problematic as the Arabic Muslim world.
