In Nigeria, we had so many oublic sector companies handling things like telephone commuincations and a few others. After we returned to democratic rule in 1999, one of the first acts our government did was to promote privatisation and economic liberalization. NITEL (the public firm that handled telecommunication) was ended and the sector opened up. Phone and internet prices dropped and mobile phone usage invreased and improved. We have even recently began privatising out energy sector with mixed but gradually positive results. This is what works. Public companies easily become useless, inefficient and corrupt.
