I am an African (Nigerian, specifically) and I will just say this to you: at some point, the excuse of "colonialism" is one even we Africans are getting sick of hearing. Botswana and Namibia were colonized. So was Rwanda. But these three countries are some of the most economically, politically stable and prosperous in Africa. They are not the only ones. Kenya, Ethiopia, Madagascar, etc. Colonialism does not have any viable measure of whether a country is stable or not at this point. Vietnam was colonized and communist for a time but they are growing economic powerhouse today. Good governance, political stability matters more because those two things ensure economic stability. Stop using the lazy excuse of "Europeans did it! It's all their fault" That does nothing but encourage corrupt African governments to continue what they do and it is quite infantilizing towards Africans.

Ikr? When I was a kid growing up in Nigeria, I always used to say to my dad, "I wish Nigeria was like South Africa". He would always respond, "Son, Nigeria would be worse if we were like South Africa" This puzzled me but as I got older and learned the country's actual history and it's fall from prominence (seriously, they once had nuclear reactors and now can't keep the lights on!) I became more appreciative of my birth country. Nigeria may not perfect by many metrics but we are miles above South Africa. At least we have n AIDS epidemic, we don't murder our farmers, nor do we promote marxism and we are a lot safer and friendly to foreigners and businesses than most. We're also less corrupt.

Ikr? When I learnt about that fact of South Africa as a kid in Nigeria, it shocked me. The only African country with nuclear reactors cannot even keep their lights on currently.

Mexico's problems stem from the same problems plaguing much of Latin America. They were colonized by Spain and, as such, inherited Spain terrible administrative processes. The Spanish and Portuguese, during their age of empire, were mainly focused on resource and human exploitation and used a feudal system of administration. This is in contrast to the British and French who, while having the same mind for resource and human exploitation, actually transplanted their more liberal-minded and economic methods of administration. The Spanish sent the elites to rule over various colonies they conquered or acquired while the British sent members of the lower and middle classes to work and build up the lands and territories they conquered and acquired. This had the effect making Spanish colonies two-tiered and more like feudal states compared to the more progressively-run and capitalistic (by contrast) British colonies. After colonialism, Latin America kept this model and it resulted in the current state of issues they face while British colonies in North America fared better by comparison.

Legit, what is the point of NATO anymore? The USSR doesn't exist anymore. Are the Europeans just too lazy to build their own armies?!

When I was a kid growing up in Nigeria, I actually knew a few white South Africans who emigrated to Nigeria because of how dangerous SA had become.

I discovered your channel around the same time i discovered Whatifalthist. Glad i still watch both of you. You bring the pragmatic Real Politik and he brings the sociopolitical and historical analysis. Respect to you from Nigeria 😊👍

@k. Yeah, you're right. I forgot about the Tigray conflict. I was more focused on Ethiopia's growing economy and progressing towards industrialization.

I doubt it. Argentina doesn't have an AIDS epidemic nor does it kill its farmers.

@juliantheapostate8295 Thanks a lot, friend. We certainly have a long way to go and issues to fix but our prospects (socially and economically) are improving.

Oh how sad....but it was inevitable. They really have no excuse for their failure as a nation. Namibia and Botswana were both colonized as well and are some of the most economically and politically stable, and prosperous countries in Africa. Plus, they are both literally next to South Africa and Zimbabwe. Can't say I, as a Nigerian, honestly feel bad for South Africa given how they (the black ones, anyway) treat my own people. They had all the opportunity and means to be a great nation (economically, culturally and socially). I doubt they can blame apartheid for this given that blacks have majority of political and institutional power. Just surreal to see that the only African country that once had nuclear reactors now cannot even keep the lights on or employ half their population.
