The Middle East has been an unstable mess since ny grandma was a kid in Nigeria (way before modern Israel existed). It has remained such since i was a kid and it will likely remain that after i am gone. They are bot nearly geopolitically relevant to start a world war but they will remain unstable mainly due to their own issues.

@etcher6841 um, you do know the Catholic Church were the major funders of Galileo's research and they also supported his work. The reason he was imprisoned was because he made political rivals,some of whom were prominent in the Church. They actually wanted him dead but the church intervened and had him committed to house arrest. Please, get your history right.

@zee9709 thanks for the explanation. Many people, myself included, tend to forget how much of a huge factor a region's geography is to their sociocultural, political and economic development/stability. Here in Africa, we certainly have bad geography but nothing nearly as terrible as the middle East.

@siddarthshah1773 no country, culture or region is absolutely innocent but some countries, regions and cultures are much better than others. That's why the west is better than the middle East.

@LRRPFco52 I can't argue with you there. Though, I would also add the poor fertility of our soils due to thicketted jungles and acidity that needs fertilizer to make more farmable. But at least water and aridity is not as severe as the middle East. Also, I absolutely agree about the largely positive socioeconomic, cultural and political influence of the west on us, especially compared to the Arab influence in Africa. There's a reason more of our countries tend to continue embracing more of these systems, even despite tenuous history.

@ryankline1164 friend, while I agree that religion can cause problems, it's more of a net positive than you think. I mean,you do know that it was Christianity that developed scientific method and many of the innovations and sociocultural and economic systems that currently benefit humanity, right?

@karunama3771 Also, don't try to make this a religious issue when what happened to Copernicus and Galileo was due to institutional problems and interests. In our world today, James Watson, a Nobel laureate and scientist who discovered the double helix structure of DNA, was stripped of his honors due to his positing the theory that genetics and intelligence are linked. This clearly happened due to the perception that such a notion is simply bigoted and not worthy of scientific research. Isn't this essentially what happened to Copernicus and Galileo? I.e. going against institutional convention?

@etcher6841 Oh, thanks. Sorry if I came off as hostile but i am glad we shared information and enlightened each other on this topic. Your conclusion is pretty much the true one based on historical evidence. Galileo did have powerful backers in teh church but even they were subservient to powerful institution of the Church and the elites/politicians outside of it. It's basically what also happened to James Watson, the Nobel laurete who discovered the double helix DNA structure. He was stripped of his honors for positing the theory that intelligence and genetics have a link because it goes against cultural notions, rather than any scientific falsehoods. At the end of the day, principles and laws may hold true but they can be subverted by corrupt humans in institutions and those who speak out tend to get silenced and shamed.

@kgypster oh, the west definitely deserves some of the blame but most of the problems in the middle East are their own fault. Look at the coups sponsored by Abdul Naseer that destroyed the governments of countries like Yemen and Iraq and led to military dictatorships and oppression. That is one example.

@karunama3771 correct. Sad how human institutions can be corrupted and full of people who use influence to counter dissenting viewpoints. As a Christian, I won't pretend the church is above this flaw. Thankfully, wiser heads in the church prevailed and let the scientific process stand and advance with their backing. You should also not forget that it was this same Christianity and Church where Monks like Gregor Mendel who practically created the field of genetics, and Georges Lemaitre who proposed the Big Bang theory, were a part of. What happened to Copernicus and Galileo was sad but please don't act like they weren't the exception. Compared to the repression of science in Islam after the Golden Age, Christianity did more and continues to do more to advance science and knowledge.

@karunama3771 Um, if it's a religious issue, can you explain why any of these other societies and their dominant religious institutions never could replicate Europe's and Christendom's development of the scientific revolution? Why didn't China, India, ancient Greece, post-golden age Islam, Pagan Rome, etc? I know most religions are social institutions but not religions are the same. For every Copernicus and Galileo, you also had the Church supporting as bad promoting medieval Christian monks like Georges Lemaitre who proposed the Big Bang theory, Gregor Mendel who practically created the field of genetics, and Roger Bacon who revolutionized optics, astronomy, and mathematics. These aren't the only examples.

@etcher6841 Heck! You do know that the church eventually came around to accepting Galileo's heliocentrism theories, right? Tycho Brahe's geo-heliocentrism was posited years earlier and as Galileo's theories gained more scrutiny and study, they were increasingly accepted, especially once the political and court interference died down.

@etcher6841 Okay, here is my source: The Galileo Project by Rice University I notice you omitted how Pope urban VIII was his main patron and backer who funded him and permitted him to publish his research on heliocentrism, as long as he didn't use it to question God's omnipotence. You also fail to mention how the Pope's support stopped due to a perceived slight from Galileo in one of his writings, and also the growing political and court intrigues of Rome that threatened Urban's life and his position as Pontiff. When said intrigues targeted Galileo, Urban couldn't defend him anymore but he still tried to prevent his death.

@karunama3771 yes, Chriiwas used by conquering regimes and kingdoms and people but it is not intrinsically a "conquering" religion like Islam or Japanese Shintoism. If you actually knew anything basic about our faith, you wouldn't even say something like that. Also, most religions make their devotees feel special and Christianity is not different
