Thank you for understanding the situation, and thank you for being such a responsible cat owner! People like you are unfortunately rare in these comments...
24
Thank you for being open to the situation, and listening as to why. These people should be given more credit for the work they do.
18
Yea, these cats are like any other invasive besides the fact that they cause more damage. No one is defending Asian carp, or zebra muscles, or round gobies, or cane toads, or feral hogs like what the frick dude all invasives are bad ones. Including cats.
6
So basically, screw conservation and let generations live with the regret and problems that their ancestors caused? Screw natural pollinators we will probably make drones to spread the seeds. Oh boy all the water systems are heavily polluted with extremely toxic algae without any bottom feeders. Where we gonna get our water? Bah we'll just evolve to drink from the ocean. Oh crap the microplastics are clogging our guts. Better evolve to fix that amiright? Oh hey more landslides due to the lack of trees keeping dirt in place. May as well evolve like moles to just live underground. Ah lower oxygen levels from us killing all the plants, need to evolve smaller bodies with bigger lungs for that. Horay! Bugs are extinct because the oxygen levels determine their size and thanks to such oxygen levels and lack of food, all them bugs are gone. We need conservation and conservation hunting. This isn't a natural situation and it's our problem to fix it instead of letting the situation rot and pass it onto the next generation.
6
If they did that hundreds upon hundreds of native species would be wiped off the planet forever. Cats kill for sport due to instinct. They are opportunists, you never know when your next meal is. So when it's millions of cats doing it all at once there is obviously going to be a problem.
5
Thank you for keeping an open mind to the situation and accepting that this needs to be done for multiple reasons.
4
Ever heard of an invasive species imported by humans? Yeah. Completely unnatural as the invasive would have never been in that area naturally. Conservation and the idea of extinction didn't exsist till the late 1800's. Get your head out of the early 1800's.
4
Thank you for understanding ;)
4
Thanks for understanding the situation, as many people see cats on the same level as humans and are making literal death threats over it, which I find just idiotic.
4
Cats kill for sport just like humans. 2-3 critters a night, with millions of cats. Millions killed a night without being eaten. In this situation, cats are the murders. In other words, cats are too evolutionary successful in non native environments. The animals there haven't had enough time to evolve against cats. Thus shall lead to many extinctions. Cats have caused about 22 native animals extinctions. So what's better, one life or thousands of lives?
4
Mice and rodents have native predators. Yea there are some intoduced rodents, but there where mice there before cats. The native wildlife should be able to handle it. Plus we have fought mice for hundreds of years, not cats. We have more experience with rodent problems then cat problems. The rodent population shouldn't be going anywhere any time soon.
4
The feral cat problem is actually made worse with the fires every year because then it leaves the natives even more defenseless, as if they did have any to begin with.
4
We have to control the invasive feral cats because otherwise innocent native species found no where else on the planet will go extinct. It was the humans that brought them in the first place. It's our job to fix our wrongdoings.
4
At least humans nowadays know when to stop killing, and to try and fix our screw ups. Cats-don't give a rip. I can see where you are coming from because irresponsible humans made the problem in the first place.
4
Did ya watch the whole video? Did you look at the numbers of things cats kill annually? Do you know what kinds of diseases cats give to livestock and humans there? (Toxoplasmosis and Sarcocystis are two major ones on a list)
4
This situation isn't natural, the cats where brought there by humans. The native species haven't gotten a chance to evolve against the cats. "Well what about evolution and extinctions of species?" This happened in the span of a century. Evolution takes millions of years. The cats are hitting too hard for the environment to keep up.
4
This isn't even on the same continent. There's a reason why the definition of "invasive" exsists, of which you may have missed. Or you may have missed the points they brought up as to why it's happening and why cats are so terrible to environments they aren't native to.
4
Feeding them won't stop the cats instincts. You see, cats are natural opportunits. You never know when you next meal will be, so they kill things even when they are full. Its not the cats fault whatsoever. But it's the humans that let their cats outside are the ones at fault. There is a whole list of reasons why letting your cat outside is bad. Literally the only reason to let a cat outside is for stimulation, of which a responsible cat owner can easily provide inside.
4
I mean well.... These culls do serve a purpose to reduce the impacts the invasive species have. Also, sport hunting is kinda necessary (in certain situations like population control I 100% agree with) like with white tailed deer. Overpopulation has and will lead to starvation, disease, and injuries. Like with more deer the more car incidents, or with deer attacking pets when they go crazy in the rut.
4
@cryptolegend6803 well, good luck with your nightmare of a situation. At least you did warn them so if you get into any legal trouble they can't do much because they were warned.
4
These are feral cats. Completely wild and untamable. If we did nothing, hundreds of species will go extinct. If you actually watched the video you would learn they are invasive. Plus cat owners are actually warned to keep their cats indoors, amd if not try to keep them in during the night. It drives me NUTS how people don't realize how TERRIBLE cats are to the environment (s) they aren't native to.
3
@scriptingrabbit705 hm yes kill the environment by getting rid of keystone species that are needed for a local environment to survive. That way we get to kill more with a thing called the butterfly effect!
3
These are hunters. Conservation hunting it's called. Hundreds of conservation hunting projects are going on around the world. But the cat man, I wouldn't necessarily call a hunter either. But the other people are.
3
That is FAR too costly and time consuming to do to millions of cats. Plus it won't stop em from killing. It's far more cheaper and more humane to put em down
3
They ain't crazy they are heros if you look at the big picture. Cats kill millions a year, for fun! So what's better, one life over the thousands that one life has stolen?
3
Cost? Millions of cats? Won't stop em from killing. The government does plan to airbomb a bunch of poisoned sauges on em with which I don't agree with. The sausages can affect untargeted species, and cats will learn from seeing their buddies getting sick from the food. This method you talk about works like a dream in certain areas. But they have already tried this, and it just won't work with millions of cats. It's hard to find a proper solution without hurting native wildlife, besides humanely shooting them. It's good that you care for animals, and that you tried to contribute a solution to the problem. It's just not effective enough to quite stop them
3
I will admit, this mini documentary is a bit brutal but it is to the point. I do think they could have displayed the problem better (example: poisoning process and effects of it on the environment and the humaneness) so it's not just you. Although I do fully support the situation. Thanks for trying to watch and learn!
3
1. You clearly didn't watch the video 2. Humans are trying to fix their wrongdoings, as God did give us free will 3. It isn't natural, this would have never happened if Karen let fluffy to party outside. Plus, the natives haven't had enough time to evolve to cats, and even then they can't evolve because cats would have killed them all. 4. Cats kill thousands of species a year, and have already caused 28 native species extinctions. 5. Cats don't kill humanely unlike humans. They often throw their prey, break it's bones, tearing it's limbs off while it's still alive. Cats aren't the angels you think they are.
3
Ah good concern ya got there random citizen of the internet! Now when it comes to TNR (trap, neuter, release) it won't work for a couple reasons in this situation. 1. Diseases. Diseases like Toxoplasmosis and Sarcocystis. Sarcocystis is a very big problem in the sheep industry there right now. 2. We simply can't catch them all, so even if we catch a majority a small population will continue to reproduce. Once the sterilized population dies off the new generation will simply take their places making the effort fruitless. 3. It won't stop the cats from overkilling things as cats kill for sport due to instinct. 4. Stress of being trapped and undergoing surgery that could potentially lead to infections that will stress the cat out even more. Plus you are moving it away from it's territory into unknown environments. Now I'm not saying TNR won't work in any situation. TNR is a wonderful solution for stray colonies, and feral colonies that live near human settlements. I personally believe TNR would be a better solution near cities because then we wouldn't run the risk of accidentally poisoning or killing someone's pet. But in the countryside shooting and hunting would be more effective then in cities.
3
@jadkiss827 so, let me guess, you don't support conservation hunting? Sure seems like it.
3
There's a feral dog problem too so it's not just cats. There's also a feral goats, feral horses, feral camels, african buffalo, rabbit, fox, cane toads, ect that are all problematic.
3
I can tell you didn't watch the video. Even in the first minute of the video it tells you why they have to do this. Watch the video before commenting please
3
This, is not like the emu war. This is about removing an invasive species. So is any form of conservation culls considered idiotic if it takes place in Australia? This project isn't the same as the other ones.
3
I'm fine with you hunting em, but I hope you warned your neighbors first to avoid any lawsuits. Otherwise, good luck with hunting!
3
@fadilahhjahamed7054 well, thank you for doing your part to protect people and other animals! It takes guts to kill that kind of animal (s) with people seeing it as evil to do so.
2
A horrible situation indeed, but the work these brave men and women do is horribly good.
2
@rcc8506 I honestly didn't know people are doing it too where you are, interesting.
2
Why? Please explain so I can understand if you are well informed or uninformed. A reply would be lovely, as I am currently doing a school project on the situation because it intrigued me. I partially disagree with the culls for two reasons: removing a predator invasive or not will heavily impact the preys numbers and send off balance in the ecosystem if done too quickly (as in this situation) and humane kills. Due to the sheer size of the continent, they plan to air drop poisoned sausages that are fatal to invasive species . The poison is called sodium fluoroacetate, and apparently the natives are immune to it. Although I am not sure about this as I have yet more research to do about said method. Feed back is greatly appreciated! Thanks!
2
Also studies show cats prefer other animals then rats and mice
2
The cats or the cat man? Either one I can understand as to why hating them but which one?
2
There is actually some sources online if you wanna get access to poisoning! I myself can't sign up because I'm in America. https://www.environment.gov.au/biodiversity/threatened/publications/factsheet-tackling-feral-cats Somewhere in the documents I remember it saying you have to sign up a meeting with your local department. Hope that helped!
2
@locked-down4wders671 gonna be honest here, I don't exactly know the laws and regulations for hunting in Australia. But I wish ya luck!
2
Actually they kinda do lol. There is an article somewhere on the internet that said PETA partially agrees
2
It isn't actually. The government officially declared feral cats as a pest in 2015, and had planned to cull millions of em by 2020, but the fires weren't planned to be that bad. Fun fact: the government has invested $3 million to the cause.
2
Studies have shown cats prefer other animals then rats and mice
2
I've heard they do, but I don't remember finding a source clarifying the cost per killed cat.
2
Sooo.... What do you propose we do about the invasive species?
2
STRAY was domestic once, breed then died. The kittens where never domesticated, making them feral. Cats have been in Australia roughly 100 years. Generations worth, so no they aren't domesticated. Stray and feral aren't the same. It's basically impossible to tame feral cats unless they are kittens. No we can't take them in because there are an estimated 2 million that are disease ridden. Diseases that are transmittable to humans and livestock. No TNR wont work because it doesn't stop the problem of cats killing things for sport.
2
Did you watch the entire video? Are ya hating on the cat man? Because that's understandable. But hating on the culls?
2
@Factz1x that uh.... Didn't really answer my question... I'd rather have a civil talk rather than throw insults, so please tell me why in a calm manner.
