Also, like, just look at the entire history of mathematics. Mathematician goes playing about with some object or field that doesn't relate at all to the real world... 50 to 100 years later, a critical use for that mathematicians' work is found. Studying what is interesting often leads to finding results long before they're apparently important, and it's simply a good thing to be ahead of the curve. Cheers.
