In the very first days of the war the Russians were very close to taking Kiev, they were just a few miles away and trying to capture 1 or 2 airports to bring their men in. The Ukrainians fought them off valiantly. That's the closest the Russians ever got and that changed everything for Putin. It had nothing to do with the foreign legion, since that hadn't even started, and although those foreign men are a great morale boost and the well trained prior service guys do have valuable knowledge and especially experience in the earlier days of the war, they themselves didn't fight off any invasion. They've saved lives but most, from what I understand are in less dangerous roles.
Some definitely are trading shots with Russians and getting arty blasted their way as well as clearing landmines, but they don't just show up in Ukraine, get handed a rifle and grenades and get unleashed like the Rambo many naive guys want to be. The Ukrainians have far more experience now, so it's a bit pointless for foreigners to go their unless they're helping with training or have valuable medical skills etc. This was is some crazy sh!t. You don't want to find yourself in that world. Artillery raining down, willie pete, hyper-sonic missiles, drones watching your every move and dropping grenades on your head..this ain't the movies.
