@JerseyDevilJerseyGirl The stars aligned for her. She entered women's MMA at the perfect time when the female fighters were about as skilled and experienced as earlier UFC fighters and didn't face any legit strikers (like Royce Gracie didn't face legit wrestlers) until Holly and Nunes. Nunes was just born with that power and speed in her hands and Holly is highly experienced with her hands, both with great reach. Ronda is an athlete, high level in one discipline, naturally strong, and had KO power but her striking was only good in the clinch and she had no defense or footwork or anything past that. Terrible training and way over-confident.
People say Dana protected her from strikers but if he was then he'd never have let her fight Nunes on her return. I think honestly that if Gina had never fought Cyborg..which then led to her retirement, Gina Carano would have been the UFC's Ronda and it would have been a much better look for the UFC. She's have bowed out gracefully, probably after also losing to Nunes. Gina vs Holly would have been amazing.
Ronda brought a lot of attention though because no one won fights as fast as she did, so many 1 minute fights. Women's MMA evolved and more athletic women arrived (just look at the athletic freaks in men's MMA now)..Ronda met her match and didn't evolve by the time she met them. Ronda is so strange, like pieces of her are missing. Fighters lose all the time and hop right back into the ring, even after a snapped femur or a vicious Jessica Eye KO or Bisping with just one eye... You can't keep them out of the cage! Ronda can't do that, doesn't seen built like that.
I think you can't be considered one of the best fighters if you've never been defeated and had to come back from it..and Ronda is the perfect example of why. Anyway, my thoughts, and yeah Dana is a man and he's into women and it's highly likely he's willing to be more helpful and considerate to a female athlete more than a male athlete, without even thinking he is. It's just how guys are. He was also trying to prove to the world women should be in MMA. An undefeated female champ helps give an audience a familiar face to get behind.
