Wow! I was there during the riots trying to get a flight out of LAX to Okinawa. The airport was closed because of the smoke and random shots being fired into the air. I was only a PFC at the time on my first assignment. I had to go out to the suburbs to Rosemead to get a room for the night because I was in uniform and didn't know how the rioters would react even though I was Black. I seen lots of looting and fires. My taxi driver had a 9mm weapon as he drove. He didn't stop for anything while I changed into civilian gear in the back seat. No one bothered us or threw rocks. Everybody was too busy looting. It was like Armageddon - Mad Max style. When the Guard was called it settled down, Reginald Denny wasn't so lucky. I finally hooked up with some Marine recruiters that got me to the USO and on the way out.
