I disagree with you that McCain would've gotten any closer without Palin on the ticket. While it is true that his pick was pathetic pandering and that most people would pick policy over gender, I actually think Palin made the race closer for McCain than it otherwise would've been, as Palin was an actual conservative on the ticket. Had McCain picked another RINO or even a former Democrat to be his VP pick (McStain admitted later on that at one point he was considering making Joe Lieberman his running mate), I think he would've lost by Goldwater proportions.
Fact of the matter is, John McStain was a piece of shit warhawk RINO running off the back of the dreadful Bush years, wanting to continue his warmongering tendencies and also had the misfortune of running when the Great Recession hit. Obama had everything going for him: He played to the identity politics crowd due to him being "the first black president", he promised "hope and change", and he was the beneficiary of the anti-Iraq voters as well as those voters affected severely by the depression. There was no way McCain was gonna beat him, especially with how awful of a candidate he was (though admittedly in an election that took place during the horrible 2nd half of Bush, it would've been difficult for any Republican to win). Palin did not hurt McCain, in fact she prevented him from losing even harder than he otherwise could've.
