  2. colababe "The Inquisition weren't real Christians!" I'm sorry, but liberals are going to have to own Maddow. The liberal tradition has been one long history of war-mongering, hubris, and the lofty demolition of common decency; all in the name of "Progress". You don't simply get to ignore Obama's expansion of the empire, Camelot's dark side, New Labour's zealotry, and those Western crusades to enlighten the savages and Third World. Liberalism, to quote Conor Cruise O'Brien, has been an "ingratiating moral mask which a toughly acquisitive society wears before the world it robs". We have the liberal establishment - so smug and certain of itself, as it forced free markets and a narrow conception of democracy upon the world - to thank, in large part, for Trump.

  4. David Mester I was talking about owning in particular sense, you strange man. In other words: if a person is showing the worst aspects of a ideology, others can't simply say, "well, they're not really on that side" (or, more likely, my side). Hence my comparison with Christian apologists. Do you have a point hiding behind all that obliqueness, or are you just wasting my time?

  6. David Mester So, you're saying: we need deconstruct liberalism as a concept so much that there's nothing of it left, and anyway it's been taken up by the Right. But "neoliberalism" is definitely a tangible thing and we should all be terrified of it, and btw, the Right's boogeyman - that evil, Jewish billionaire Soros - forced it on us? Call me arrogant, but you are a waste of my time.
