What if the reasoning for full riveting reveals itself in battle? Wasn't that also the era plate came about? Just a guess. Perhaps mail would usually break at the rivets because the solid rings were much firmer, making the riveted links a weak link. And that with everything riveted the stress is more even on all rings when struck. And that wedged rivets would allow for a faster production, allowing them to make a better mail within a shorter time frame. Again, just a guess, I do not own mail.

I was wondering what kind of materials people used to maintain their steel and iron before we had fossil oils. I always hear about 'oiling' or 'greasing' up armor and swords as well as polishing and so forth. But I just wonder how they did that back then! Perhaps this would make a good topic for a video?
