  1. The long leggings were seen as feminine, because obviously to them the cold was not an issue... As there was no cold. Furthermore it was indeed a mark of being foreign, a barbarian because only the northern tribes wore these. They had also held the belief that nobody could live North of Germany as it would be too cold. Turned out there were people living there. And in fact this is where the Germanic tribes had come from. I think the only reason they had to change their mind is out of necessity, being stationed in Northern Gaul and Southern Britain.
