My guess is, the guy either had something happen in his youth, been bullied or something and he thought this was he time for vengeance... Or... He got angry at first because of these thugs, opened his loud mouth. Then when someone started yelling back at him he panicked and thought he ended up in some gang stuff and shot at the car. Either way, I don't believe he ever saw a gun, but do believe he feared that the loudmouth may have a gun and may start shooting at him... So he figured, he better shoot first when in doubt, better him than me... Of course he knows that's not a good enough reason to shoot at someone so he spins the story in this really silly way that doesn't hold up.
