  306. To me, blaming media of any kind is generally pretty silly, apart from outright fake nonsense like Infowars, which obviously exists only to spread bullshit. The bigger issue to me is the complete lack of media literacy and critical thinking skills among the population. It really is not that hard to find accurate information and then form a fair opinion. But people don’t want to do that. They want to confirm their biases and let other people think for them. We need to start teaching this stuff in classes. At the very least it should be a major unit in civics classes (which I believe most high school seniors take), and ideally should be touched on much earlier as well. That can’t stop people from being willfully ignorant, but it can at least help those who wish to think critically but just can’t. Like, I watch David a lot, and he has admittedly influenced my opinion on economics quite a bit because it’s an area I didnt know a ton about. But I also went out and did some research of my own. I looked at the actual data, not just people’s interpretations. And it seems to match up. Of course there is some level of confirmation bias there, and we can’t totally eliminate stuff like that, but I at least looked elsewhere and did some critical thinking of my own. I am able to read/consume perspectives and ideas that I agree with and those I disagree with (and everything in between) and evaluate them. But I fear a lot of people can’t listen to something without either taking it at face value as gospel, or completely ignoring it because it doesn’t confirm their existing biases.

He benefitted from Hillary being smeared for 20 years, Comey, and Hillary’s poor campaign. Who knows what happens in the next couple years, but as of now I’d say 60% he loses, 40% he wins.

  621. Most of this rings true to me as a teacher. However, we have to understand that so much of what happens in US education is dictated by what happens at home. I don’t have the data off hand, but if you look at just middle and upper class students, our test scores and such look much more like peer countries. But we hate poor people in this country, and so we let them suffer, and of course that brings the average down.
