  1. South Vietnam was close to a peace deal with North Vietnam in second half of 1968. Nixon campaigned on ending the war. Great news , right. Yes, great news for Democrat Humphrey who was leading in the race. Nixon convinced the South to exit the peace talks as he would give them a better deal. The South exited, Nixon won by a tiny margin and began a massive escalation for the next 5 years. 22,000 more US soldiers died.
