The country has the government it deserves. Everything happening today from the hard right policies of the worst government in history not just living memory to Starmer's determination to maintain neoliberalism by continuing Tory policies, is the inevitable consequence of the electorate voting against its own self- interest all the time. That includes the so called 'new' Labour era when the party accepted the Thatcherite settlement. Most switchers who voted Labour in 1997 identified with Tory policies according to focus groups afterwards, and millions never bother to vote. This hard right, overtly racist government, is way to the right of UK politics in the 1990s and is worse than Thatcher even. Almost no solidarity in the workplace and poor union leaders also mean nothing will change. The voters ignored Kinnock's warnings in the 1980s because they think they know better. Fools.

1985 was a great year for music.

@AdrianNelson1507 I prefer Abba. More melodic.

@bereal6590 Clearly I am referring to the country based on the voting system of first past the post. It should not be necessary to spell it out every single time for goodness sake. Patronising response too.

@davidsandz2186 On the contrary. In a number of sectors, especially education, support for strike action has been limited. NASUWT did not vote to strike. Most unions are weak and will recommend pay deals that are pay cuts- this is defeat and plays the bosses and government's game. The decline in wages is catastrophic and the union response is nowhere near enough- the workers and union leaders have failed to act for at least a decade and a half. This makes it much more difficult to act now- it is too little, too late. Powerful union leaders is an oxymoron. They do not have much due to anti trade union laws and few trade union executives are rock solid being robust in doing their job properly on behalf of members. Honourable exceptions such as the PCS is not enough. Pay in France and Germany is higher- the average family in France is 10% better off than in the UK and in Germany it is 20%. You might think things are going to change substantially but I very much doubt it. I hope I am wrong.

@jCrItCh5 The government has made a number of statements and adopted positions that can accurately be described as racist. A former senior minister in Johnson's government was reported as describing Braverman as a 'real racist bigot' in The Guardian recently. Look it up.
