  7. It is Lloyd George's fault that the Anglo Irish Treaty 1921 was signed, after he threatened to restart the war against the Irish Nationalists. Atrocities were committed on both sides and violence solves nothing but the British establishment created a settlement that resulted in a civil war and set the stage for the Troubles of the 1960s- 1990s. Lloyd George was privately sympathetic to the nationalist cause but the minimum the Conservative and Unionist Party ( still its official name, which they reverted to for expediency in the referendum over Scottish independence in 2014) would accept was the six counties remaining part of the United Kingdom, hence partition. LG was a Prime Minister without a party at the head of a coalition dominated by the Conservatives, having split his own Liberal Party ( again at the behest of the Conservatives) in 1916 when he replaced Asquith as Prime Minister. Time and again, the Conservatives have been on the wrong side of history yet it is an abiding mystery why they have been allowed by working people to subjugate them in every conceivable manner for over 120 years largely uninterrupted. A united Ireland is inevitable and I hope all sides can live in peace and build a future together.

  8.  @Jase29  Nonsense. It is they're not their but never mind accuracy either in spelling or facts about Brexit. Britain is the money laundering capital of the world, much of it Russian money. There was Russian influence in the Brexit referendum and the report on this was watered down and brushed under the carpet by the government, the most incompetent since universal suffrage but that's ok in the eyes of those duped into voting against their ( see what I did there) own self interest by a Prime Minister who does not even believe Brexit is in the best interests of the economy regardless of the lies of the leave campaign. In France, the abject failure of Brexit means the calls for Frexit by Le Pen's party have faded away. Putin apologists on the far right in France have gone quiet now they have been exposed for undermining France and the EU, precisely what Putin has wanted all along.

  9. They had to give two weeks notice so for most it is no more than inconvenience. No one likes it but the world does not revolve around the needs of individuals alone. The claims that the strike is responsible for deaths due to medical treatment deferred is disgusting. It is up to hospitals to work around it as I am sure they have. Austerity was responsible for thousands of deaths according to official figures. If pay had not been depressed in the interests of the rich, there would be no need to strike.

Putin is a menace and wrong if he really thinks NATO is a threat to Russia but the Cold War mentality of both sides can be seen at play here. NATO is a defensive alliance, fact, but it was the same in the Cold War when the Soviets felt encircled ( wrong then too) and under threat. But if Ukraine not being in NATO is the price of a rapprochement it is a price worth paying. I hope the Americans and the British et al have got professional historians as well as Russia experts advising them ( and good interpreters who do not miss the nuances in what is said), as Russian history and sense of itself is a feature that cannot be ignored. Putin is bad news and it is not in the best interests of the Russian people for him to be in charge. But they have been duped into thinking he is protecting their national interest from an abstract threat. He is also a creation of the west after the shock therapy and misguided triumphalism at the end of the Cold War created a power vacuum into which stepped oligarchs and a 'strong man' dictator. The west has also been complacent in not standing up to him over Crimea but this time the situation is too dangerous to allow hubris to obstruct the need for a diplomatic solution. Just like occurred in the Cold War when required.

Some would cite the saying that one man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter, although it is not something I am endorsing in these remarks. The oppression of the British state was unacceptable for certain, and the actions of the Black and Tans were condemned by the Liberal and Labour parties. Asquith compared the actions of the British state to despots elsewhere. The Conservatives wanted Ireland to remain in the empire ideally and approved of the repression as long as they thought they were going to have their way. The ceasefire of July 1921 changed the dynamic and LG outmanoeuvred Collins and Griffiths in the talks in London. De Valera sent Collins because he knew he could not return with a deal for independence and the British would insist on the oath of allegiance to the Crown. That is why de Valera did not go himself.

  18. It would be no surprise if there is a repeat of the riots of 2011. Law breaking is not acceptable, however unrest on the streets cannot be ruled out. I doubt the claimed 12,000 police on the streets of London actually happened in 2011 to stop the riots, not least because there were no pictures of the massed ranks of police on any television channel. Police cuts ( they have been reversed but it will take time to cancel this out entirely) will make it far more difficult to keep the lid on it this time and the anger is even greater than 2011.

  20. I am not religious but the hatred for asylum seekers and migrants is ungodly and obscene. There are often double standards from the churches to say the least but in the absence of a completely secular society ( which would be a good thing), they have a role to play in speaking out against the hatred towards others that animates so many in this country. Utterly shameful and shameless.

  23. There must be a leadership challenge if Labour forms a government, within a year. He is on Sky talking absolute rubbish about his top team in the reshuffle. Watch this space for how badly some ministers perform in a Labour government- it is going to be very concerning, and inexperience and poor political judgement is going to show almost immediately.

  25. The worst Prime Minister in a hundred years bar none, easily. He is and always was unfit for public office. He should never have been selected as an MP. Too many people in Britain ( mainly England) are fundamentally unserious which is why they see something of themselves in Johnson ( although it is not reciprocated- he would not associate with anyone who is not wealthy and from his class). It is no surprise he was elected as the first celebrity prime minister. He is responsible for the degradation of political life and the coarsening of the fragile construct that passes for democracy ( it isn't much but it is better than the alternative) but so are his enablers in the Conservative Party and anyone that votes Conservative.

  33. The idea of the end of history is a discredited theory. American triumphalism ( and other nations) at the end of the Cold War led to the disaster capitalism imposed on the former Soviet Union that plunged people into poverty, destabilised the entire system and bred the oligarchs. Communism was bad but the wealth of the Russian people was stolen from them twice over, first by communist dictatorship and then by the criminal gang that moved into the vacuum created by the shock therapy applied to the economy. Putin has been allowed to get away with his actions for twenty years by the west all because of money/ greed. A tiny minority of individuals in the west and Russia have been enriched at the expense of the majority in Russia and the playground for the rich that London and other capitals have become. The Conservative party is up to its neck in this, turning a blind eye to the money laundering in the city of London and accepting donations to its morally bankrupt raison d'etre, to make the rich richer. In the process, Putin has been allowed to destroy the security architecture of post World War Two. Putin has been emboldened by western weakness and now the world stands on the brink of the third world war.

  34. Nonsense. Centre right or right leaning is used in the UK media to denote to the right. Hard left is frequently used in the UK media to denote the left but it does not refer to the hard right. Johnson's government is hard right and would be referred to as this if the media was accurate. The BBC is scared of the Conservatives ( UKIP in all but name) and even Channel 4 has gone soft post Brexit.

  37. I like Trevor Phillips but he needs to ask tougher questions and is perfectly capable of it as an experienced journalist. Marr was often not robust enough but his temporary replacement has failed to shine. The introduction to the programme last week or the one before stated that the country was going to have to learn to live with Covid as if it were an incontrovertible truth and not a contentious position. Coincidentally, it just so happened to be the government's talking point for that time.
