@RC-9 Not necessary to put it in perspective for me. The economy was growing in 2010 when Labour left office. The Tories lied continuously claiming that the economy was left in a mess by Labour, making false comparions with Greece to justify austerity. Austerity held back recovery, and the Tories failed to reduce both debt and deficit by their own measures. Britain was not bankrupt in 2010-countries that issue their own currency cannot go bankrupt. Pay attention at the back. The BMA estimated that the Iraq war killed up to a million citizens in the country. Labour failed on many levels but its biggest mistake has been to capitulate to Thatcherism/ neoliberalism. the root cause of all UK problems since 1979.

There are two ways of looking at it. There was an article in The Guardian following the interaction which put it in a different light. Some of the criticism of Sunak on this occasion was unfair. To be clear that is not a wider defence of the Tories as they are the worst government of all time in the UK bar none.

Labour is not on the side of the workers and in some ways Sunak is more personable than Starmer. Yes, the Tories policies are dreadful on every level but in an era of post truth, personality politics, Labour will have a problem on the door step with voters who do not think about the issues, know little and are persuaded by simplistic ideas like stop the boats. Delivered by someone they perceive as personable, it will play into the Tories' hands. The polling is already suggesting Sunak is gaining popularity.
