@MCDONALD6969 Spoiler alert- Britain is an extreme right wing capitalist country. Tories should be deliriously happy with inequality, poverty, crumbling public services, sewage in rivers, poor education outcomes, high levels of violent crime, stagnant wages, weak unions and the rest. I know it could be more hard line but the path to even more extremism is safe in the hands of Labour and Tory for the next few decades. Soon it will be the 100th anniversary of the 1979 election and we can all celebrate even greater inequality then. First the 50th anniversary in 2029. Roll on the good times.

Low productivity has been an issue with the UK economy since the early 1980s for various reasons, including the appalling management culture that has worsened considerably in the last 25 years. Bullying is rife in the UK, a nasty country where the nastiest go getters are often to be found in managerial positions in different sectors. Nothing is done about it most of the time, and lives and talent is destroyed without anyone batting an eyelid. Until bullying carries jail sentences ( not likely but the point is valid), nothing will change. It would drop precipitously overnight. There are other countries where the culture in the workplace is far less hierarchical, more collegiate, and workers have more protection. Workers show little to no solidarity in the workplace, too scared and spineless to support victims of bullying. Pastor Martin Niemoller's famous poem is apt about the importance of standing up for what is right but no-one is listening in Britain. No-one is talking about the fact that bullying is one of the major reasons for the exodus of teachers in the UK, either.

@cathalduffy1618 Comment does not make sense. Cite the source for the productivity issue starting in the 1950s.

They will not. People in Britain rejected moderate policies in 2017 and 2019, proving how extreme right wing the country is. The centre ground argument put forward by Starmer's supporters is nonsense- the so called centre has moved inexorably to the right in the last 15, 25, 40 years and Labour has followed. Britain is an outlier in Europe and the rest of the world in that the policies advocated in 2017 and 2019 rejected under FPTP are part of the mainstream elsewhere. Most Britons whinge and pay lip service but in reality could not care less about inequality, poverty, racism, underfunded public services, low tax for the rich, etc.

The horse has bolted with the Blairite takeover of Labour and eradication of the left. Neoliberalism is safe in Starmer's hands. '“We think that it is time for a change for Labour. The grip of the Blairites and individuals like Peter Mandelson must now be loosened once and for all. There is a virus within the Labour party, and Jeremy Corbyn is the antidote." “We reject the notion that Labour needs to move to the centre ground of British politics. The centre ground has moved significantly to the right in recent years. We do not see arguing for fairer wealth distribution, decent jobs with good pay, terms and conditions and a substantial increase in affordable housing for the next generation as a leftwing agenda." Dave Ward, The Guardian, July 2015.

@SlowhandGreg You simply do not understand- continuing the same policies as the Tories is a road to nowhere in addressing the issues facing Britain. Labour is fully signed up to the same failed policies as the Tories. Both are neoliberal parties that believe in the extremist philosophy that has destroyed Britain since 1979. If you think Starmer is going to improve anything you are seriously deluded. Dream on.

Not even that- voting Starmer's Labour is replacing one Tory party with another. Neoliberalism is the name of the game, that is why Corbyn's leadership had to be destroyed to prevent any moves to start reversing it. Britain will continue to have the government it deserves until or unless people wake up and realise they have fallen for a con trick for nearly fifty years. Oh well.
