Neoliberalism is the root of the problem- it is the word that should be part of every conversation for those interested in a route map out of the mess. Until it is widely understood and the dots are joined, nothing will change. The SNP and Greens have rejected neoliberalism in favour of social democracy or democratic socialism in the case of the Greens, while Labour and the Lib Dems cling to its wreckage as society and economy collapse in front of their eyes. Labour abandoned its founding purpose to represent the workers against capital under Blair when it embraced Thatcherism. No wonder she described 'new' Labour as her greatest achievement. Starmer has nothing at all to offer.

Scotland has a right to decide on its future- if the will of the majority is for independence, so be it. The English have no right to deny this. I am English but there is no future for the country and the rest of the union under failed neoliberal policies that have caused the only destruction you should be concerned about, i.e of economy and society.

He will do his best to. This is new Labour mark 2 re running the nineties. Never mind that the nineties look like a utopia compared to the problems of today, new Labour is back to serve the interests of the rich.

@andydyer6591 Truth. He is the establishment pick to maintain the neoliberal status quo. No doubt and he will be a disaster. The world is spinning out of control on so many levels. At a time when Britain needs an Attlee to reverse neoliberalism it is quite possibly going to have Starmer as the Tory/ establishment continuity candidate. The future is bleak.

More unions should cut ties with Labour and leave it to its neoliberal delusions. Some have seen the light in this respect and more broadly there is a recognition by the union movement that it is wasting its time with Labour to a large extent, hence the focus on winning industrial disputes. Labour's lack of support for this speaks volumes and vindicates the changed approach by the unions.

@PorthLlwyd Exactly. Two nations for at least a hundred years divided between south and the rest of the UK and London is now, to all intents and purposes, a city state on its own. Totally divorced from the rest of the UK.

@jonnylumberjack6223 Well said. Context is everything.

@richardmaynard4942 Thank you. PR is vital but Labour has ruled it out, another example of its timidity and hopelessness in the face of growing support for it and the fact it would clearly help to make democracy more representative. It does carry the risk of extremist parties gaining seats which no right thinking person wants to see but they would not have much influence ( hopefully). Neoliberalism is an extremist ideology that is so insidious, not just because of the damage it has caused, but also the way it has infected every aspect of life to the extent that much of the time people do not even notice it. The price of everything and the value of nothing to coin a well known phrase. Lack of faith in politicians is both dangerous and understandable in many ways but it is up to the public to channel that disenchantment into demanding more from the system and properly engaging in the issues. Knowledge is power, etc.

@TheGava4 Absolutely disgraceful. Denial of reality won't make the dire consequences of Brexit go away. Starmer is shaping up to be a disaster as PM.
