Comments by "80s Music" (@eightiesmusic1984) on "Labour MP slams Tory austerity at Enough is Enough rally" video.
Valid points but MPs are part of the establishment. First RCN strike in 106-year history and that is lauded? Why have they waited this long to act? The strike will be called off anyway in all probability. Labour does not represent working people- it is committed to neoliberalism and is on the same page as the Tories on many issues. It capitulated in the 1980s- Thatcher described 'New Labour' as her greatest achievement, in the nineties. Labour supported austerity under Cameron and was still going to implement it if it had won the 2015 election. Swearing does not bother me personally, but no MP who is serious about changing the political weather will convince the unpersuaded by swearing. Very immature.

She does not. Richard Burgon would make an excellent leader as he is very eloquent and impassioned when the occasion demands it and measured in other contexts, while making the same fundamental points. Rosena Allin-Khan would also make an excellent leader but lost in the vote for Deputy Leader to Angela Rayner. She is an effective parliamentarian, but I was perturbed that the party had passed up the chance to elect a deputy leader who was highly articulate and would have been a great advocate for the left both within the party and in the media.

@Don Doodat Nothing in your comments that suggest you are a considered thinker. Labour has accepted the Thatcherite settlement since the 1980s, with the exception of the Corbyn interregnum. This means your first sentence is incorrect, given that the right is firmly in control of Labour and some of the key Blairites from the 1990s are back on the scene. Starmer has reverted to type. No need to elaborate on what she said as I observed that she has valid points, therefore I agree with her analysis of the issues she highlighted. I am on the left and always have been, but this speech was preaching to the converted. Swearing is immature for an adult delivering a speech and, rightly or wrongly, will put off floating voters who need to be persuaded, including the 15 million who do not bother to vote in Britain. Look at some of the great speakers of the last 100 years and none of them swear in speeches. Anger can be expressed in all sorts of ways in a speech. No-one will remember Zarah Sultana's speeches in years to come unless she improves. Have a listen to Richard Burgon, who is an impassioned and highly effective speaker very much on the left.

@InfiniteBeak Missing the point by a long way. It is possible to agree with the sentiment in what she is saying and question one aspect of delivery at the same time. Not contradictory to hold two thoughts in the mind at the same time. Find me any great speech from a public figure of the last 50 years where they swore.

@Don Doodat I made a fair point in response to your previous comment. I do not care but I bet you did read the whole comment. You unfairly commented about me not engaging with the issues and I gave a considered response. I would seriously reflect on your own comments in order to avoid doing precisely what you have accused me of.

@InfiniteBeak I repeat it does not bother me personally, but it does not strengthen the argument and may fail to convince the millions who do need to be persuaded if real change is to happen. There are plenty of ways to express ideas passionately but swearing is ludicrous in this context coming from someone in public life.

It is disaster capitalism. Naomi Klein and others have written about how the rich take advantage of economic problems to transfer money from the majority to the wealthy. Trouble is most of the voters under FPTP are ok with it most of the time, hence the fact they keep on voting against their own interests as elections since 1970 show except for the 13 years Labour were in power. Labour has been in office 33 years since 1900 and before 1997, only 20 in almost 100 years. The people of this country have themselves to blame for its parlous state and their acceptance of Tory policies that cause havoc. Even some right wing governments elsewhere in Europe are more effective in looking after people than here and actually to the left of the Tories in the UK. They are an extremist political cult.
