Britons are economically illiterate. Let's count the ways, pun intended. 1. Supported austerity for several years despite it holding back recovery, loss of thousands of police, underfunding of public services, library closures and pot holes everywhere. But never mind, it must be right. 2. Nearly eight million adults are illiterate. No wonder slogans like Get Brexit Done and Stop The Boats work their poison. 3. Few appear to have noticed living standards plummeting since the 2008 crash year on year until recently, otherwise they would have gone on strike years ago for wages. All the money lost is never going to be recovered regardless of the useless below inflation pay deals many unions are going to settle for ( sell out the workers for). 4. The contradiction between US levels of taxation and public desire for high quality public services has delivered Tory election wins since 1979. The circle cannot be squared. If the rich are not taxed properly on income and wealth, inequality cannot be reduced. 5. Union membership is historically low. If the public were to the left on economics the reverse would be the case, as there would be a groundswell of support for collective action. Many in unions tolerate weak union leaders who do little to nothing to advance improvements in pay and conditions.
