@D C I agree. The food is rubbish, many people are cold, you never know where you stand with people either. I was born here and I am 52 but frankly wish I had been born in any other European country without right wing governments most of the time. Even some right wing governments in other nations in the last half century have presided over stronger welfare states than the UK, which has been a laboratory for neoliberalism. It will never change in my life time because most Britons could not care less about the greater good. It is me, me, me all the time except for lip service to the idea of the collective good.

Hard to understand why anyone would want to live in this awful country but you are absolutely right. When the lie was told that bankers would move to America if they were taxed more after the crash, no figures were forthcoming to show how many departed. If the media was doing its job properly, the lies the Tories tell all the time would be held up to the scrutiny and mockery they deserve but the media manufactures consent for permanent austerity. Tax the rich to raise money for public services and give the poor more money because they will spend it on goods and services, boosting the economy. Keynes would be turning in his grave.

@D C The defining characteristic of British life is the class system. The Marxist definition is that unless you own the means of production or have wealth that means you do not need to work, you are working class. In other words, ninety nine percent of the population. Yet snobbery and social climbing means people are obsessed with which class they think they are in and see life as perpetual ladder climbing and trampling on others. Nothing wrong with making money as long as it is fairly distributed and those with the broadest shoulders share the burden more equitably. Tax rates in Britain for the rich are lower than in most other European nations regardless of Tory howls of self-pitying anguish. It is telling that most people overestimate which class they are in ( impossible to measure anyway, another reason why the Marxist definition is much simpler!), believing they are middle class when their income does not match. Most Britons are delusional and politically illiterate with barely any meaningful grasp of economics. Hence the mess we are in.

@patrickdervan3444 Yes, that is why so many live in the UK. Otherwise they would not be here.
