You would find many military documents that take Earth’s curvature into account through necessity - did Dean Odle’s video mention that? I highly doubt it.

  24. The Saros cycle can predict the day of an eclipse. It can’t predict the exact time or, in the case of a full solar eclipse, what the path of totality will be. That can only be calculated with a knowledge of heliocentric orbital mechanics. The Earth’s circular shadow during a lunar eclipse also tells us that Earth is a sphere, not to mention that flat earthers still can’t explain how a lunar eclipse occurs, something that is trivially easy to explain by the heliocentric model.

  34. You're right it doesn't make a lot of difference to our daily lives what shape our planet is but to say "no 1 knows" isn't right and that's the point - we do know. The beauty of science is we can use it to tell us truths about the natural world that our senses alone can't. I think the reason a lot of people get up flat earthers isn't so much because they think Earth is flat, it's because they are willingly attempting to take a massive dump on centuries of scientific progress whilst providing no actual alternative theories that make any sense.

As for the known distances on earth conforming to a sphere, I don’t need to prove it, its proven by millions of people travelling around the planet every day who can reliably verify that those measurements are correct. You flat earthers are always demanding proof aren’t you? But none of you seem to be able to prove your silly little space pizza fantasy is actually true. Funny that isn’t it? Like I said, when one of you absolute tools can demonstrate with verifiable data that known distances between two locations on earth can all work on a flat plane then maybe you’ll have a leg to stand on.   45. I very much doubt that the majority of people claiming to be flat earthers actually believe the earth is flat. My guess is it’s largely a troll movement. Also, those stats you bring up refer to one survey. I’d be interested to know how it was conducted (ie. how many responded, how the questions were posed, how widespread the respondents were geographically, etc.). Statistics can be misleading. For example if 99% of respondents were 99% sure that Earth was a globe, technically those 99% had some degree of doubt. See what I mean? I refuse to believe there are than many idiots in the world.

In the images you've linked the sun's rays are shown to be parallel for the sake of simplicity because for all intents and purposes they are as the sun is much larger than Earth. But because we're talking about the moon's shadow, the interplay of these angles has the effect of producing umbral and penumbral shadows.

Go to the beach and watch a boat sink below the horizon - there’s your evidence that water is curving. If that’s not enough, consider the fact that intercontinental navigation uses global geometry - and it works flawlessly - and so if 70% of Earth is water, then by extrapolation we can reliably conclude that it’s curved. Generally you would only do an experiment to prove something that isn’t blatantly obvious in the first place.

Often. The simple fact is that if Earth was actually flat then this would be verifiable through simple observation of reality and measurements. The sun and moon would behave in a certain way. Stars would behave a certain way. Objects at a distance would appear a certain way. Distances between two points on Earth's surface would be a certain way. But when you do that, what you will find - beyond any shadow of a doubt - is that Earth is a sphere. I could list numerous ways that proves this but let's be realistic, you'd find some way to dispute it and I'd be wasting my time. So maybe let's just leave it at that.

I've seen many videos supposedly showing this and what you will almost always find is that they've used a simplified curvature calculator, they haven't taken atmospheric refraction into account and the measurements for distance and viewing height are vague or just not mentioned. All these things come into play if you're going to make a genuinely scientific evaluation of an observation. A better question would be, if the Earth is flat, why can't we see entire mountains 100's of kilometers away at sea level? Why do we see large objects dip below the horizon as they get further away? "The 'flat earth' model was misrepresented in the video, you can at least agree that her opening argument was a strawman" I would agree that most flat earthers don't believe Earth is accelerating upwards but her video was more about why the philosophy of zetetic astronomy is flawed so I wouldn't call it a straw man argument. As it stands, the upwards acceleration of Earth as claimed by the flat earth society is a very minor side note in the overall presentation.

But why is it that not one single flat earther is willing to prove their “model” is correct? Why have none of them gone to Antarctica in the summer months to witness the midnight sun (or prove that it doesn’t exist as the case may be)? It does exist of course, as hundreds of thousands of people can testify, and it overwhelmingly disproves the flat earth model. Still waiting for one single flat earther to actually try and show evidence that they’re model is correct. Almost seems like it’s too much to ask doesn’t it?

The simple fact that the sun doesn’t alter in its apparent size throughout the day is clear evidence that it’s not a small, local object whizzing around above our heads. Or the fact that two observers standing thousands of kms apart will see the moon from pretty much the exact same angle. These are two simple observations that show that the flat earth model is clearly wrong. As for the earth’s shape, observations of the stars from different latitudes demonstrate conclusively that earth is a sphere, none more obvious than the fact that we have two celestial poles, something that flat earthers still have to ignore as if it’s a trivial inconvenience. But probably the simplest and most obvious proof is simply by looking at known distances between any two points on earth which will only conform to a sphere - especially when you look at distances in the Southern Hemisphere. If this isn’t enough evidence for you then you are probably just not being honest in your search for truth.

He merely states it as fact. Another example, he claims Polaris can be seen from the Tropic of Capricorn. Again, stated as fact but not substantiated by a scrap of evidence (that would be difficult given that it’s blatantly untrue). I could go on but if you want to prove me wrong, by all means do.

Facts 1 and 2 are correct. "Fact" 3 is highly questionable. Yes, you can see often see a bit further than the purely geometric dimensions of Earth would allow due to the refractive properties of our atmosphere, particularly over bodies of water where this effect is heightened - but "much" further? Hmm, I don't know about that. All flat earth videos supposedly showing this are over distances rarely beyond 30 miles which isn't that far and in virtually all cases there is no allowance given for atmospheric refraction, and details regarding distances shown and height above sea level are sketchy at best. I have genuinely examined many of these myself and found this to always be the case. Fact 4 "Every body of water seeks its own level" isn't a fact, it's a meaningless flat earth mantra. "There is no scientific method proof anywhere which disproves this statement" is complete nonsense. Celestial navigation for example, which has it's foundations in scientific fact even though it has a practical use, demonstrates beyond any doubt that Earth is a sphere. If you want to argue that Earth isn't a sphere, then explain why we have two celestial poles 180 degrees apart. Good luck with that.

There are no contradictions, some people just get hung up on the “pear” analogy and think earth should look noticeably fatter - when what the science actually tells us is that the variation is minuscule cosmically speaking.   288. I don’t think it’s the fault of scientists for not stopping the flat earth movement, for reasons you’ve pointed out, but it does highlight the need for better scientific education. Sadly though, this is only going to be a band aid solution. The fact is that these ideas stem more from distrust of authority figures. In fact I think science is just a generic scapegoat for these people’s fear and loathing of the world around them. The only consolation in all of this is that while centuries of scientific achievements are collectively shat upon by these mental leprechauns, on the flip side it will awaken a scientific curiosity in others who are spurred on to find out how it is that we’ve come to know things. Because flat earth, while being enormously stupid, does ask an interesting question - how much of what we accept as truth is merely what we’ve been told to believe?

  296. If you actually watched the video, it’s not about what flat earthers believe, it’s about why they believe it, what are their motivations. It seems to me that pretty much every flat earther that attacks this video completely misses the point by jumping on the fact that “real” flat earthers don’t believe earth accelerates upwards. It doesn’t matter, it’s not that important. If two people looked at a duck and one said “that’s a cow” and the other said “no, that’s a cat”, is it that important what they said, or the fact that they were both deaf and blind?
