TheNecrosanct and lake Toba is the largest
3
Actor Adam Anouer namely Lake Toba, Anak Krakatoa, and Mount Tambora, all of which are responsible for some of largest/deadliest eruptions in human history. Tambora and Krakatoa are the two deadliest eruptions in recorded history while the last eruption at Lake Toba was the largest explosive eruption in the past 25 million years
2
Roblox Gamer unzen is basically the same
2
@SceneArtisan and Vesuvius can be just as devastating even if the eruption is smaller
2
@claraaudina3037 Toba might actually be even bigger, more recent research shows that the most recent eruption from toba might have actually been one of the largest explosive volcanic eruptions that the earth has ever seen
2
Simon-Ricardo Kühn volcanoes tend to be both beautiful and dangerous
1
SOS Titanic that eruption was in a sparsely populated area and only killed 57 people. With the sole exception of Kilauea, the majority of the volcanoes on this list have killed thousands of people when they erupted
1
Syu Bidu Damdam and Vesuvius is more dangerous than both
1
TheNecrosanct true but Vesuvius has the potential for much more destruction since the government in Naples isn’t really prepared for what Vesuvius can really unleash and the buildings in Naples aren’t really able to withstand earthquakes. The government in Naples (and the surrounding area) are operating on the assumptions that the next eruption will be like the one from the 1630’s, not the one that leveled Pompeii in 79, and that they will have up to two weeks of notice before an eruption happens. Two weeks of advanced notice doesn’t really help much if your evacuation routes are cut off due to crappy building standards and increasing earthquake activity
1
TheNecrosanct merapi might be more active but Vesuvius has more people living in its red zone than any other volcano
1
Vesuvius Gaming 2000 only because it’s larger. It’s funny since the people in the bay of Naples are actually in danger from both campi flegrei and Vesuvius
1
@VesuviusGaming-um5yn it would be if Fuji had a history of large explosive eruptions. Fuji isn’t known for violent eruptions like Vesuvius is and the people of Japan are more prepared for handling volcanic eruptions (namely timely evacuation and building precautions for earthquakes) while the same cannot be said for the people living near Vesuvius. I’m pretty sure that Vesuvius is closer to Naples than Fuji is to Tokyo
1
@VesuviusGaming-um5yn it’s still too far from Fuji and Fuji isn’t known for large eruptions. The evacuation wouldn’t be hampered by bad building either. The same cannot be said for Naples regarding Vesuvius since it’s much closer to Vesuvius, Vesuvius has a well known history of violent eruptions, and the buildings there are not built to handle earthquakes
1
@aron1332 toba would likely make the 1815 eruption of Tambora seem like a firecracker by comparison
1
RAM.claws 949 it was number 3 but should’ve been higher since it’s more likely to happen
1
Alex Durn agreed
1
Pitrus Pitrus true but the eruption from Vesuvius killed more people
1
Naufal Efge Krakatoa and Tambora are more dangerous than both of them
1
Luubelaar that and it hasn’t erupted during the history of modern humans
1
Meesmoth tambora did the same to an entire culture that lived on sumbawa in 1815
1
Ashkhan11 some are more dangerous than others. Some are like Kilauea where you can be on the volcano most of the time even when it’s erupting while others are like tambora and Vesuvius where you don’t want to be anywhere near them when erupting
1
John Higgins and Kilauea rarely kills anyone yet it’s still number 10, the worst that Kilauea does is property damage
1
TheNecrosanct Yellowstone wouldn’t be number one on that list, it would be either Lake Toba, La Garita, or the Siberian Traps since all three were larger. The Toba eruption was the largest explosive eruption within the last 25 million years, La Garita was possibly the largest explosive eruption in earths history, and the Siberian Traps possibly triggered the worst mass extinction event that the earth has ever seen
1
Actor Adam Anouer it is but it doesn’t seem to include what types of eruptions are likely in the area. If they did then Vesuvius would’ve been number one since it has a history of violent eruptions and has a high population density
1
@josecarrilloii4036 Vesuvius could actually beat that if it had a major eruption. Tambora might’ve killed between 75,000 and 150,000 but Vesuvius has around 3 million people within striking distance and could easily destroy Naples
1
Actor Adam Anouer and had been constantly erupting since around 1983
1
redpanda416 it’s because volcanic soil is extremely fertile
1
Vesuvius deserves number one since there are millions of people living near the volcano and Vesuvius has a history of particularly violent eruptions
1
Michael Gentry only in recorded history,. the deadliest volcano ever is most likely the Siberian Traps due to it basically triggering the Permian Extinction which was the largest mass extinction event in earths history
1
MILDRED LLAMES it does have more people living in its danger zone
1
Eres Mamey I’ve been to two of the volcanoes on this list, Kilauea (which shouldn’t really be on this list since it’s not a particularly dangerous volcano) and Vesuvius (which definitely deserves being on the list since it’s a very dangerous volcano)
1
TheNecrosanct the population of Iceland wasn’t very big when laki happened and tambora was more powerful
1
BrokenCurtain laki only killed 10,000 officially, they aren’t sure if the eruption was connected to the famines at the time
1
Harry Hayfield the year without a summer came from tambora, not laki. Plus lakai wasn’t the only Icelandic volcano that was erupting at the time, so was grimsvoltin
1
TSR-Animations the tambora eruption ejected around 150 km3 of material, the salamas eruption ejected only 40 km3 of material. Tamboras eruption was larger but both were massive eruptions
1
TSR-Animations I know. I was only commenting that both were massive eruptions even if tambora’s eruption was bigger. It’s actually ironic that both eruptions occurred during the little ice age, the salamis eruption occurred during the beginning and the tambora eruption occurred towards the end. Either way I’d rather endure an eruption like the ones at salamis and tambora over ones like Lake Toba (the only active super volcano that is larger than Yellowstone is) or the Siberian Traps. Tobas last eruption was larger than the last three at Yellowstone and might have almost rendered humanity extinct while the Siberian Traps almost wiped out all life on earth 252 million years ago
1
Shining Emerald23 I know, it was the deadliest known volcanic eruption in history and killed at least 70,000 people
1
@aron1332 toba is likely the only active super volcano that is actually larger than Yellowstone is
1
@thenecrosanct4906 plus it wasn’t just laki erupting at that time, grimsvoltin (the main volcano that the laki fissures branch out from) was also erupting at the time
1
@med109 Yellowstone hasn’t erupted within human history, lake Toba (which is even larger than Yellowstone) has though
1
sniperkain that probably inspired the creation of this list
1
I honestly feel that Vesuvius should’ve been number 1 since it’s more likely to experience a major explosive eruption than the others are and it will likely be sooner
1
Actor Adam Anouer those were sub plinian, not full plinian. The last full plinian eruption was the one in 79 and Vesuvius has eruptions of that size once every 2,000 years or so and the last full scale plinian eruption Vesuvius had was the one that destroyed Pompeii
1
Alex Durn and Vesuvius could still have eruptions of that magnitude
1
Vesuvius Gaming 2000 Vesuvius can still have eruptions that are larger than the Pompeii one
1
Actor Adam Anouer actually it did, it caused around 840 deaths and was the second largest eruption of the 20th century
1
stuffums for a volcanic eruption that could end life on earth you would need something more like the Siberian Traps to occur
1
Actor Adam Anouer that only helps IF they can evacuate in time
1
live stream zombies Vesuvius destroyed multiple cities
1
John Higgins then number one shouldn’t be on this list since only 3 people were killed there by volcanic lightning
1
