Rohrtos he wasn't there for them because he was dead for a good chunk of their lives. goku died twice for gohan (with the second death being gohans fault for getting cocky against cell) and he was dead for the first several years of gotens life, the only time that you can legitimately say that he wasn't there for his kids was during the year after the fight on namek.

Bruno Kamei given the events that were going on in gokus life such as the world constantly being threatened by insanely powerful beings and the fact that goku never had a father figure when he was growing up, it's understandable that he wouldn't really know how to be a good parent (it's not for lack of trying)

  10.  @Jdudec367  exactly. Outside of the year following the fight with frieza on namek, goku had a good reason for why he couldn’t spend as much time with gohan. He was dead for the year between the arrival of radditz and the arrival of the other saiyans, he had to spend more time in the hospital due to serious injuries while gohan went to namek, spent most of his time on namek in a medical pod, he trained with gohan during the 1-2 years before the androids showed up, got sidelined by the heart virus, and spent a lot of time training with gohan to prepare for cell only to die again cleaning up gohan’s screw up. Goku chose to stay dead for the following seven years because he felt that most of the threats that endangered the earth did so because he was there (frieza coming to earth and the threat of the androids and cell did happen because of goku)
