  13. Ulf Åman it’s pretty well known. Most of the people in those cities would’ve survived since lava from Vesuvius isn’t very fast. They died because they didn’t flee during the hours before Vesuvius unleashed the pyroclastic flows and surges. Even if a similar eruption happened today you would have virtually no chance of escaping a pyroclastic flow/surge unless you are very far from it (at least 10-15 miles away) and in a vehicle driving away from it
