A lot of rotational mass around the crank shaft, a lot of wear surface and non-concentric rotation causing vibration is why it is not a mainstream engine today. But why it worked? It fired 3 times per single rotation of the crank, like a 3 cylinder 2 stroke would do. Not to say those issues can't be overcome, and maybe they have been for all I know, but we don't see them used much anymore for some reasons.

The rotor was not going fast enough, and the wrong chamber ignited, (pushing that lobe the other direction). It does not happen at faster, and running speeds. But he does have to pull it fast enough to get past that point. I think I remember a bad one in the vid, (it is like a backfire), and it blew flames out of the intake.

@sandervanderkammen9230 Only for the start up. There is no electrical power to the glow plug after it starts. Weather the coil of the glow plug stays red hot when running, I don't know. If not, than it has to be the compression that fires the fuel.

@abecx If we did not allow politics to make "unburnt fuel" such a evil, (fossil fuels in general, no matter how efficiently they are burnt), you would have thousands of dollars in your pocket every time you bought something with any internal combustion engine that can transport you. Nobody whats to destroy the environment, but people do want to destroy your ability to create your own wealth. "Pay more sucker". That is what they say.

@taylorlatch2635 That would be a rotary valve 2-stroke engine, the intake induction. There are also most common, piston port and reed valve 2-stroke engines. I build those 2 for a living, do OK too. :) 2-stroke phases, I think are 6 and the phases overlap (following fuel/air mixture flow) 1) Intake phase 2) Primary compression/transfer phase. 3) Cylinder scavenging phase 4) Cylinder compression phase 5) Power stroke phase 6) Blow down phase. (distance from the top of the ex port to the top of the transfer ports). There is no 2-stroke that uses a rotor to control exhaust flow. If there were, they would be clean burning. I don't think anybody has found anything feasible that can take the heat.

@doktorbimmer Arctic Cat Snowmobiles had a single rotary/wankle engine in one of their production 1974(ish) Panthers, (I think Panther), snowmobiles. A good friend I grew up with had one. It did not rev quickly and vibrated quite a bit, but it ran well. A good "Trail breaker" back in that day.

@doktorbimmer There are many designs. But if they are good designs, in a free market, we would produce it for the market. Now we produce everything for the EPA no matter how much of the free market they destroy. I bet we would be paying 20% less for cars and bikes.

@sandervanderkammen9230 OK, you are a fairly sharp guy. But to answer a question, (with a question), that makes no sense is a bit futile, isn't it? :) I am still trying to figure out where "after the combustion chamber" is, and where the turbo is.

@WarpedYT I once read about "where the middle finger came from". Old war story, English on horses armed with hand made long bow's, (I think in the 1400's). If they got caught, the enemy would cut off all of their fingers off their "string hand" except the middle finger, (thinking they could not pull the string with one finger.). The bow was hand made from the wood of a Yew tree, and to shoot it was called, "Plucking Yew". So when the horse back archers returned to the field for battle, they still could pull the string back with one finger, and waved it to the enemy, -----"See, I can still "Pluck Yew!". Everything has a history. :)

@valiantvincentius5877 As far as the combustion phase goes, it is more like a 3 cylinder 2 stroke engine, as it has a combustion phase 3 times for every rotation of the crank. (or a 6 cylinder 4-stroke engine). This Wankel engine is a diesel engine. No spark plugs, no ignition control. It used a glow head for starting, then no ignition for running.

@sandervanderkammen9230 They are both called "rotary" engines, but for different rotary reasons. The plane engine with cylinders all around, about a crank shaft, is still a reciprocating piston engine. So in reality, which is the best engine to be called a "rotary engine"? Is my Harley a semi rotary engine? :)

We had a model build of a plastic see through Wankel engine that my brother built around 1969 as kids in our toy room. It had an electric motor off a battery that rotated the masses. Back then, we were amazed about what people had built, (and just put a man on the moon), and we were taught to figure it out at a young age. Today's kids? What do they figure out?

@WarpedYT I don't agree with him. I was interested in your motor, not your personal mannerism's as if the vid was a sit-com. I did not even notice what he mentioned. I port small 2-stroke engines for a living, (mostly for 1/5th scale RC cars), and have a little shop. Have you any idea what the HP output is on that proto? I very well may be the most popular engine builder for the engines I build in the world, (16 years doing it now). If we can make the engines, (and I think we can), and if they are applicable to the RC cars, we could sell a lot of them, (I also work with the best distributor in the world). Out of a 30cc 2-stroke engine, we are getting up to 7hp, (I own a water brake dyno), and high RPM to about 21,000rpm. My name is Doug, in Michigan. This a RC model engine that runs on nitro-methane/methanol/castor oil, (most likely fuel, same for a little 2-stroke nitro RC engine), and they can run rich. This one is running rich. He can never tune it nearly as well as a modern engine management systems, so we should not compare it to them. For it's size though, the little RC engines are probably the most dirty internal combustion engines on the planet,----but they are small and small in numbers. Who cares? By the way, I think by definition, this little engine is classified as a diesel. Glow plug and compression ignite the fuel.

@sandervanderkammen9230 As any engine with a "lot of miles on it". Who knows how well it was maintained. They made production on many things. That would not have happened if the reliability was not up to par.

That is the thing about nitro methane and methanol engines. They can run rich and not lose a lot of power, (unlike gasoline). But you can lean the fuel/air mixture for better fuel consumption.

@sandervanderkammen9230 The loss of mechanical efficiency per combustion phase, compared to a piston engine, is offset by the fact that it has 3 combustion phases for every rotation of the crank. That is 6 times that of a 4-stroke piston engine, and 3 times more than a piston 2-stroke engine.

Why do they make a lot of power for their size? Because it actually acts as a 3 cylinder 2-stroke engine, with 3 power phases for every rotation of the crank.

@sandervanderkammen9230 Wheew, lower than I thought it would be, (what is the size/displacement equivalent?). That is only about .26lb/ft of torque at 20,000rpm.

Not so fast. You can see the combustion pressure is not as direct on the crank rotation as a piston engine, but it fires 3 times for every crank revolution. That would be the same for a 3 cylinder 2-stroke engine, or a 6 cylinder 4-stroke engine. That advantage is huge, but I am not sure of the displacement differences though.
