I think they just roughed them out, and are sending it to another shop to have the valve ports precision machined so the seats can be pressed in. No way that drill press is going to do that work. But after seeing their surface grinders, I am surprised they do not have a manual mill that they can do that work with, and they would need better measuring tools.

That is all well and good, but if you can afford a new head for the machine, (and can still get one), that is nothing wrong with buying a new one, especially if you may depend on it a lot. The chances of this work breaking again in short time is too high of a risk if you need the machine with as little down time as possible, and too high of a risk for anybody who can afford a new one IMO. This--is all they can afford. Quite capable grinding surface machines I saw though. They could have finished the job if they had a good sized manual mill instead of that drill press. They must have sent the head out to get that machining finished, and the seats pressed in.

They are preheating the cast iron so when they add the hot weld deposit, the internal stresses will be reduced in hopes it won't crack again soon.

I tell the baby sitters to mind their own business. :)

They are going to wait until they run for 10 more years, to show you they left the shop as good as new. :)

Mickey Mouse. No, not that you can get a lot done with very little modern machinery,----------- but that you guys sound like Mickey Mouse when you talk. :) Sounds like you fixed all the cars/bikes on the road driving by too. I bet there are no electric cars in your neighborhood. You guys really need a Bridgeport mill though. That was a drill press. You have some good grinding machines there, and that Blanchard grinder you used are not very common now a days. I was wondering what you had for the machine work, and after seeing the grinders, I am amazed you could not get your hands on a good size Bridgeport mill.

End of the vid before machining the valve seats. You must send it to somebody else to machine that part of the job. You can actually do that with a Bridgeport (or similar), mill also.

Go price that head new,---if one is available. Show me a union guy from manufacturing who can do this. You won't find one with the skill. It was a joke to hire them in our non-union shops, that paid less, but had the skill. I took the skill and started my own business, and made more money than any union worker in the world though. So I say the union worker is held back when there is still some free enterprise left. When that goes, almost zero wages will be the new normal that progress promised us.

It's like the beginning of the industrial revolution over there. Cool to see what industrious people can do with so little, (the surface grinding machines are no joke though. Every die shop in the USA has them), but also sad because I know they can be just as advanced as anybody else on the planet if the world was governed like the original USA, where the real industrial revolution started.

Like all countries today, they live in a nation where they are really not allowed to grow a free market business. But these are the kind of guys who can grow a free market business. Bummer.

@leicestergux Depends on how long it lasts, doesn't it? If it cracked again in 10 miles on you, what would you suggest?

Early industrial revolution, USA.

Depends on what you are doing. But another topic, I am no baby sitter, but no way would I run a Blanchard Grinder with no safety glasses.

And I bet you were a union guy in that foundry and machine shop-----------------------------because it is a drill press, not a mill. I am sure only roughed it out and sent the head out to a "non-union machine shop", (where they do know the difference between a mill and a drill press), to machine in the valve ports and press in the seats.
1
You know darn well they had to send it out to have the valve ports machined to press the seats in. Hey, they basically live under communism, and are not allowed to grow. The USA is falling into the same dead end hole. That is actually called a Blanchard Grinder.

I am not a baby sitter, but no safety glasses running a Blanchard Grinder. Not me baby.

Doesn't sound like they are going to be forced into electric cars anytime soon.
1
Judging by the sound of the traffic driving by during the preheat and weld processes outside, it does not sound like they are going to be driving electric any cars soon.
1
it does not sound like they are going to be driving "any" electric cars soon.

It depends on how long it lasts, doesn't it? If it cracked again on you in 5 hours of use, would you agree with your own statement? :)
