@Jose04537 The place to have that conversation is the budget, not the debt ceiling. By all means, Congress should be having discussions about long term spending and revenues, but threatening the solvency of the government, which is following budgets and obligations already passed by Congress, is foolish.

As they should. The debt ceiling is about paying debts that have already been incurred, mostly through obligations that have already been approved by Congress. Reducing government spending during economic expansion is a budget conversation.

@davidmichlin6777 I assumed the former, but my point is that sort of fiscal planning occurs in relation to budgets not debt limits. Frankly, the debt limit is a bizarre concept that doesn't exist in other countries and for good reason. If Congress wants to reduce spending, it should pass smaller budgets.

@michaelsmith4904 He's referring to the Fourteenth Amendment of the Constitution. The bit you quoted is, frankly, irrelevant to the topic. He said section 2, but he meant section 4: "The validity of the public debt of the United States, authorized by law, including debts incurred for payment of pensions and bounties for services in suppressing insurrection or rebellion, shall not be questioned. But neither the United States nor any State shall assume or pay any debt or obligation incurred in aid of insurrection or rebellion against the United States, or any claim for the loss or emancipation of any slave; but all such debts, obligations and claims shall be held illegal and void." The argument is the US can't default on its debt because the Constitution supercedes the authority of any other laws, statues, etc, including the debt ceiling.
