Many expected the strategic weaponry to come out if NATO dared to attack Russia directly and.........two weeks in, nothing more than Russia fighting the same way, just now on their own land. However if you could somehow imbue the population overnight with such knowledge, I can guarantee we'd not be in this fight. Ukraine/Russia have been "cousins" since before the time of the Kievan Rus. Ukrainian and Russian princes took the same road to pay their tributes to their Mongol Golden Horde overlords for centuries. They fought and defeated the Mongols together. They fought and defeated the Wehrmacht together. Now, after 1500 years, a few Nationalists let themselves be convinced by NATO diplomats that they need to be "separate" from Russia. A separation mostly that favors NATO, and they have led their fellow countrymen to disaster as a result.

  17. There are 67K Ukrainians massed to the east of Bakhmut. There are about 40K (mostly NATO-trained) just north of Zaporizhzhia, with maybe another 20K north of Donetsk. That is it. That is Ukraine's combat power; the bloggers who track units are very, very good at it---the leaked US intel confirmed this. Two weeks ago Zelensky mobilized again because 120K or so won't do as Russia has 180K around Bakhmut alone.

  19. As usual, it takes some time for us to get the full picture. Russian MoD recently reported to Putin they identified about 50 military, and 250 commercial satellites that actively participate in the war against them. They didn't specify how, only that this is an issue we need to "resolve".

  20. These small cheap drones ARE changing the battlefield calculus, but it remains to be seen if that change is permanent. I'm not sold on cheap drones making armored vehicles the "battleships" of the modern era---vulnerable to the point of irrelevance---yet. First, these drones are tough to deal with precisely because they are the size of a bird----but that means they can't go far or carry much. They mostly annoy tanks and heavier armored vehicles, but if they penetrate thinner-skinned vehicles they can destroy them. One thing I feel this war has taught everyone is that air-defense now must come standard on almost every vehicle. You cannot rely on sending a few AA vehicles along with a force as the drone swarm will just overwhelm them and then everyone else is defenseless. Future vehicles will ALL need to have an AA system standard---every tank, APC, IFV, armored car, etc. will have to mount a system that can destroy drones. Maybe some larger radar at a safe distance can be networked to all vehicles so they can share the "view" and shoot down the drones, as it would not be feasible to put a radar on every vehicle (which would just make them more "visible" in the EW spectrum). Tough problem, but weapon designers will counter it.

  23. Russians are doing exact same thing, but they use drones manufactured by their MIC. The Lancet, now in its 3rd generation is the killer of $10M Leopard 2 tanks. It costs $25K. Ukraine bought up to 70,000 cheap toy drones on the market all last Fall and Spring. They strap little grenades and bombs to them like you see here and yes they have been effective, but due to their cheap origins they don't go very far, can't carry very much, and are easily jammed. There are many vids of these things flying at and hitting Russian BMPs and T-80s and the vehicle just shrugs off the blast and keeps right on going. Ukraine has to use these because the bigger, expensive ones given to them by Biden, like the Switchblade, are dependent upon GPS, easily jammed by Russia and have proven to be almost worthless.

  24. The reason the war is a struggle for NATO and Ukraine is because they are not on the side of right in this. The arc of history bends towards justice, and there is nothing "just" about US involvement in this war. NATO is a military alliance and like any such organization it exists to destroy its enemies; everything it does is in furtherance of this goal. Convincing Zelensky to accept weapons and do the fighting on NATO's behalf was in the interest of providing a future willing partner in moving US Aegis Ashore missiles, currently in Poland and Romania, closer to Moscow, as well as allowing the US Navy to create a "Black Sea Fleet" based in Crimea. Go look it all up; as late as 2019 US Navy was publicly issuing contracts to expand and refurbish old Soviet-era naval bases in Crimea. With land based missiles and a fleet of warships, both using the Aegis Combat System, and all mere kilometers from Russia's border, Russia would be the United States' slave in all but name. That is why she fights as if her life depends upon it because it DOES. In Zelensky, the US found a willing partner in a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to put a noose around Russia's neck and loosen or tighten the knot whenever it pleased.

Wagner just took Bakhmut from a NATO-trained force of 60K soldiers. As a company their value could not have been higher until this past weekend; all Prigozhin had to do was keep doing what he'd been doing and after the war his global contracts would have increased by a factor of ten.   48. Today is a decisive day. Ukraine has reached the first "observation line"; about 5km from the first actual defense line; the area made famous as "Bradley Square". This is in Zaporizhzhia near Robotyne, which is in the Tokmak defense sector. This is probably the most heavily fortified area in all of the annexed areas, and one of the four most likely attack routes everyone estimated a year ago. There are five defense lines in front of Ukraine; they have not yet reached the first (5km from it). The Lancet drones here are so numerous they fill the sky like flies. The mines are so thick, you could walk from Orekhov to Tokmak without getting any dirt on your boot. Artillery here falls like rain; and the Krasnopol laser-guided shells can hit a single vehicle from 25 miles away. The Ka-52s and Mi-28s, unbothered since Ukraine has no air force, now have new LMUR missiles with 15km range, even better than the 8km range of the Vikhr missiles that murdered the Ukrainians back in June. Behind all this, sit hundreds of T-80BV3 and T-90M tanks; ready to pounce upon whatever survives the Dantes Inferno described before. Not with 500,000 men could Ukraine do this; it is folly.

  56. Anyone being honest will admit that Russia has destroyed the myth of Western superiority in weaponry. Technically, NATO weapons are of higher quality overall, however in combat conditions the gap erodes to a significant degree. That small advantage is then more than compensated for by Russian numerical superiority. Perfect example is M777 howitzer. It cost $4M, while a Russian D-20 howitzer has the same range, but cost $300K, literally 10 for every 1 M777. On the range or at a Parade, the Western weapon is superior. In the dirt, mud and years of brutal warfare, the Russian is superior. That is one of the main reasons Ukraine's offensive failed so miserably. Bradley takes one hit and all its fancy tech is broken beyond repair. A BMP-3 takes a hit and its back in action the next day.

Sure, in maybe 5 years you will see the effects of restrictions done today, but in every single one of those five years Russia will be working on alternatives. Even if you can successfully choke the flow of newer equipment; they'll just use older stuff stripped out of products from a decade ago. A 10 year old GPS chip may not be as accurate as a new one, but who cares? Russia will just add more high-explosive to the warhead to make up for the 10-meter loss of accuracy.   222. Most Westerners assume "NATO" is this big happy family that always acts in mutually beneficial ways. That couldn't be further from the truth. Many are historical rivals; they only come together to protect themselves from the Bear. Otherwise, they act in their own interests most of the time. Like Turkey or Hungary have recently, or even Italy just today. Yesterday that idiot Macron shot off his mouth about "NATO troops" and today at least ten NATO countries flatly said "nope!". Italy in particular was forceful as they know what it means to attack Russia. Italy sent a huge army into Russia in 1942 in support of their ally, Germany. 235,000 Italian troops fought at Stalingrad but the Red Army destroyed them almost to a man. Italy will NEVER in a thousand years send an army to Russia again.

  225. Just look at what's in the aid and it answers all questions. No tanks, no bridging equipment, no SPGs, no offensive firepower of any significance other than the ATACMS. That isn't new, just longer range----Russia been shooting those down for months. Sure, some get through and do damage, but the next night RU sends twice as many Tornado-S back and hurts Ukraine 10x more. This package is to allow an infantry-heavy army to DEFEND; nothing more.

  228. In the Cuban Missile Crisis, the US made it clear war was the only response if Russia didn't remove the missiles from Cuba. Russia backed down and no war. Before this war, Russia made it clear to NATO war was the only response if the US/UK didn't stop pusing for Ukraine to join their military alliance, Biden and NATO ignored Russia and now we are locked in war.

  231. It won't matter because Biden will just "secretly" send in any number of US troops to support whatever Ukraine needs to make them combat ready. The US Military is running spy drones, and AWACS sweeps (from Polish territory) 24/7 and sending all that data to Ukraine. There are US soldiers in Ukraine training on everything under the sun. Those Russian "rebels" from last week were clear CIA operatives. Austin and Milley are guiding Ukraine on strategy, etc. Ukraine at this point is a seventh branch of the Armed Forces of the United States.

  232. It is a close race; it always is. However if it breaks big one way, my belief is that will be for Trump. The Democrat Party wants to send US troops into Ukraine; it is the ONLY way the troops from other NATO countries will go (and UK, FR, Poland, + the little Baltics all want to go too). NO one will go without the US though, and that can't happen without Congress Approval. If Harris wins and the DEMs get Congress it will guarantee a US Army deployment to Ukraine I cannot believe a majority of the US population wants to risk open war with Russia over Ukraine so I believe Trump will win, and he'll win big.

  235. Russia has captured an intact example of every NATO weapon sent to Ukraine. You name it, they have it. My tinfoil side sometimes thinks Zelensky is really a double agent and works for Putin. He is constantly asking for new NATO weapons which eventually become new Russian ones. This war has been the greatest military technology transfer program for Russia since 1945

We know what will happen: For about two weeks CNN will run breathless Ukraine MoD vid of this blowing up Russian artillery, and Forbes will run an article about how its a "game changer". Then, things will go quiet for about a month, then in early March we will hear (from the blogosphere, not the Western Media), that Russia figured out how to jam/disable it, and they are now useless. Like the vaunted "switchblade" attack drones from a year ago, that Russia just jammed GPS in the area and the switchblades fell out of the sky like flies hit with a spray of RAID.

  240. This "nukes in space" scare is so transparently a ploy to scare the population into voting this war funding bill, I have to believe those behind it truly believe we are all stupid. Yes, Russia has publicly stated there are military and civilian satellites that they know are actively working against them, but that is all they've stated. Our "betters", spin that into "nukes in space". All Putin would need to do is send a strongly worded letter to the civilian companies "your birds better go dark when over our territory, or we will make them go dark permanently". That alone will solve the civilian sat problem. The military one will take a bit more; how much depends on who owns it. Of course the toughest will be the US and UK ones; no letter, no matter how threatening, will stop them.

  241. Ukraine fired at least 12 Storm Shadow missiles at the bridge between Crimea and Kherson yesterday, and every single one was shot down by Russian air defense in Crimea. I know this is true because if even one missile had hit that bridge, CNN would have had it on their page for the last 12 hours with ten different "experts" analyzing the damage and stories on how Putin has been "weakened". The only thing CNN has had on its page about Ukraine all day is an article about Poland shaking with fear about Wagner. 🙂
