Hyundai and Kia are too vertically integrated. Their parent companies all use in house components making them cheaper, but nothing is best of breed. Engines blow up, DCTs grind to pieces, etc. Their EVs may change this but I'd wait at least five more years before trusting their EVs. Toyota for me.

Honda+Nissan should be able to dominate in "performance" hybrids. Just a few years ago Honda had the 3-motor/3.0l V6 hybrid in the MDX which was 375hp/32 mpg but no one bought it, primarily due to expense. A decade ago Nissan had the 3.5v6 with hybrid punching about the same in HP/MPGs so both have the skills. I heard Mitsu may be in on that mash up too which will REALLY help them. The JDM world must continue to have Nissan and Mitsubishi; even if they are just brands of Honda.

I think its worth it. You are paying for exclusivity; you'll never see another one while you are driving. All the others you mention aren't limited editions so not really apples to apples (and the Tesla is joke quality compared to all others so comparing that to an Acura is like an apple to toilet paper).

Genesis is brand new so their percentage change is huge as they are coming from basically nothing. I don't consider a Tesla a "luxury" car as they are $20K cars on top of $90K batteries. I also wouldn't put too much faith in these short term results as we are at the end of a decade of "easy money" when people working at Amazon Delivery can buy $80K Hellcats. This is all going back to normal soon.

Who cares? I can assure you gas cars will still be sold in Texas or Oklahoma in 2050. 🙂

Its a BMW. Doesn't count

The issue with these 2.0s in large vehicles is once you load them up the performance drops off. Put your wife and kids in, and your luggage on top and drive it up the IKE to go skiing and that 2.0 will struggle. Do that for years and that engine won’t make it 125K miles while the v6 would give you 200K easy.

I think Nissan / Infiniti has already turned the corner, but like steering the Titanic it takes time for the bow to move. Their new stuff uses ZF transmissions which means they just went from the worst transmissions in the world to the best. The VQ engines, among the most reliable on earth, are still in the mix, and I hear the VC turbo fours are at least as good as Hondas or Toyotas. I just hope they can turn before they hit the "iceberg", as I switched to Infiniti after I got tired of my BMWs burning oil at 60K miles....

My first car was a 1984 Supra in 1989 when I was 19. I loved the Mk III but and IV but by the time I was out of college and could afford it, they were gone. When they announced the Mk V I was excited but then immediately deflated as it is just a rebadged BMW. I've had two BMWs and respect them, but a BMW is NOT a Supra. I wished the LC 500 or RC-F had just been de-contented to Toyota levels and would have been an excellent Mk V, not a dam BMW. If this is true, Toyota has another chance to get my money.

Turning the interior of cars into an array of slab-faced rectangles is a mistake imho. It doesn't look good, it looks sterile and industrial, like the command console on the bridge of ship. When you are spending $80K you need more than industrial.

Wow. I'm a Nissan and Honda fan so I'm bummed. Nissan had some good hybrid tech but nothing Honda critically needed. Nissan has too much pride....

Compared to which other country?? Are you joking? Here's the rank: 1. Japan. No other vehicles will run as long and interiors remain intact for the amount of maintenance required. 2. American. Buttons will fall off, plastic will crack but with regular trips to Autozone and a shade tree mechanic, you can keep American cars on the road almost as long as Japanese ones for a reasonable cost. 3. German. Only if you are willing to pay for the car twice can you keep a Benz/BMW/Audi on the road for 12 years. 4. Korean. Greatest variation in outcomes; some will go 200K miles, others will need an engine replacement twice before 100K miles. Reflects the fact that Korea has only been able to build reliable combustion engines for about 20 years. That's all you need to know.

Honda was making some crazy good performance hybrids just a few years ago (so was Infiniti crazy enough). The MDX Sport and RLX Sport hybrids had reliable V6 power, hybrid systems for performance, DCT, and a 20% bump in mpg....everything you'd want....aaaaannndd nobody bought them. I'd love to have an Integra but $52K is absurdly expensive for a fancy Civic----you can get a brand new Lexus ES350 for that.

@xzimxzim Yes, you are right the RLX had the higher HP variant. That car got NO love, but a 2020 RLX Sport Hybrid is a TON of luxury performance for under $30K now. IF you can find one. 🙂

These are great cars, I just wish I could buy half of them

Reservations on the red one just opened: $2K refundable deposit and they say "low to mid $60s" for the price. I think that is fine. Just the carbon fiber extras would put another $3K on the price of the regular fully loaded Type-S and you're at $58K anyway. Another 10% for a hand built limited edition? YES. However the blue one you can't reserve till December so I have to wait... 😞
