I'm not saying NATO needs to disband, but it is healthy to occasionally look at things you've done so long you've forgotten why you do them. In this case, NATO grew out of the ashes of the original League of Nations. In both cases the aim was to keep world peace. Prior to WW2, this basically meant keeping Germany and France from trying to crush each other. After WW2, the focus was on the Soviets and not allowing Communism to spread. 80 years have passed; no one is alive who remembers those times. It is a good idea to look at things from a fresh perspective and change as needed.

When you make a person pay their OWN HARD-EARNED money for something, it naturally forces a deep level of evaluation of its value to them. If you just give them money; they have little respect for the sacrifice it took to earn that money. The US paying everyone's bills for 80 years has made an EU that has no respect for the value of a euro spent for defense. That ends now.
