Those Swedes were training Ukrainians on using the AWACS EW planes announced earlier this year they were going to donate to Ukraine.   24. Well, we learned from Putin last night that Germany has many options to get cheap LNG from Russia, but either they (or Ukraine) has opted not to do so. Instead, they pay much higher rates to get it from Europe or US which has smashed their economic competitiveness. As long as the German people accept this as the "price" for supporting Ukraine, things will probably not get too bad. I would not count on that lasting very much longer however...

Russia's Orlan drone loiters in the sky at will 70 km deep into Ukrainian territory and has been doing so all year long. The new Lancet attack drone now has 80 km range (just look up this week's strike on a Mig-29 70 km from the front). The Abrams' turbine engine will glow like a 4th of July sparkler to the thermal sights of the Ka-52, whose new missiles have 14 km range and are "fire-and-forget", not like the 8 km range ones that required the gunner to maintain lock that were used to decimate AFU at Bradley Square in June. The Orlan (Eagle) got a new targeting system a year ago called "EYE" (get it? EAGLE EYE? 🙂) that directly slaves it to the fire control of any TOS-1A or Tornado-S MLRS, or Krasnopol laser guided 152mm shell, meaning as soon as Orlan spots one, DFA is on the way. If, by some Divine Blessing, an Abrams survives all that to reach the combat line, the Kornet missile will rip it open just like it did the Challenger 2 a couple weeks ago. With double the bounty on it now because it is a US tank, any Ukrainian going into battle in that thing is a dead man walking.

Russian ones are manufactured by their MIC, not built at home by hobbyists or stitched together from racing drones bought off Ebay. Just spend a week watching FPV attack video (there's a LOT of it) from either side, you'll clearly see the Russian ones are far more robust, bigger rotors, bigger antennae, etc. with military displays. The Ukraine ones still have the display from the racing drone manufacturer. Also, Russia has far greater drone jamming tech, again from their MIC. Ukraine is definitely fighting well with FPV drones, but Russia just has better ones and more of them. Pretty much like everything else.

ATACMS is fired from the HIMARS launcher, so the launcher Russia has been hunting and destroying for almost a year now is still the weak point.   241. This past month the battles have been fierce. Not a day goes by without lots of new combat video on all the various military blog sites. One thing stands out to me: BOTH sides are making fewer and fewer mistakes. The "Bradley Square" from June, with Ukrainians running into each other, hitting mines, getting blown up with ease; that doesn't happen anymore. They are still losing vehicles, but they are losing them while attacking, not because they are jumbled up running into each other. The Russians are experienced, that is obvious. Like the Swedish CV-90s that were knocked out and captured last week...the video clearly shows them attacking and firing, but the RPG round comes from the side, not the front. That means the Russian soldier WAITED until the CV-90 passed him before firing, knowing his round had better penetration chances to the side than the front. FPV drone video shows both sides often fly past a vehicle, then turn around to hit it from the rear as most vehicles have less armor in the rear and ex-Soviet ones in particular carry their fuel in the rear. If NATO sends in their troops, it will be a year of them being slaughtered before they gain the experience necessary to survive.

With too few soldiers and too little training for the ones they have, the effect of all this new weaponry is visibly diminishing. 15 of the 31 Abrams tanks destroyed in about 6 weeks of combat (and there is not a single video of an Abrams destroying any RU vehicle or equipment).   299. The first "drone war" would probably be Iraq/Afghanistan 2003, the Predator drone killed 90% of Al Queda/Taliban leaders. However, the drone has evolved; large aircraft sized drones like Predator operate in Ukraine by both sides, but they are vulnerable to fighters and AA missiles since they are slow and have no stealth. This war the drone has evolved to be much smaller, almost impossible to spot on radar as it would appear to be birds or something. Once spotted they are hard to hit as they are barely bigger than an office chair; Russia has had much success just jamming them since you just need to point the jammer at the drone. The good thing for armies is that due to this very small size to increase their survivability, they have poor range and cannot carry much explosive force. The Russian Lancet drone has been very successful at hitting things, but when it hits a tank it really just damages it as that vehilce is too heavily armored. However if it hits things like artillery, trucks, APCs, etc. it is enough to detonate their ammo and destroy them.

Sometimes the days battle updates can vary a bit, but when they all definitively say the same thing, taken together that is Gospel. BBC/SKY said Russia sent VDV (Airborne) to Robotyne yesterday. If that is true that means THIS next line is the one where they mean to HOLD, because VDV are Paratroopers---the "Elite". This can only mean AFU is now in the kill box and they are not going to be "allowed" to go deeper. The only way forward for Ukraine is to smash through. Meaning drive up to the dragon's teeth and push them aside or blow them out of the way, bring up equipment to cross the anti-tank ditch, then via these crossings, continue forward. All under the fire of 100 guns, 1000 drones, mines, FAB-500s, attack helicopters, TOS-1A, Uragan, etc. Ummm, yeah.... If Ukraine tries to just brute force their way, the slaughter we will see in the next few days will be on the scale of Iwo Jima or Okinawa.

What would have been an "easy run" for Israel's F-15s is now extremely dangerous and even the F-35 has to be careful around the S-400. The GPS jammers are virtually guaranteed to make the bombs miss; Ukraine stopped using Excalibur and JDAM near the front because they always miss. As a longtime military historian, one of the things I most respect about RU is how they keep so many old weapons, for decades even, long beyond when you'd think they would be useful, and here they are in 2024 still punishing their opponents. NATO by contrast, so vastly wealthy for so long, throws away virtually anything over 30 years old. Earlier this year at Avdiivka, RU took anti-submarine rocket launchers from the 1960s off old warships, welded them to a T-55 chassis, and instant mobile artillery. Designed to sink subs, the rockets were huge but inaccurate since they were meant to be fired in a pattern in the open ocean. Didn't matter since area effect what exactly what was needed at Avdiivka. Now, at Kursk, since AFU is using mostly speed/mobility tactics with wheeled armored vehicles, RU has used the MT-12 Rapira 100mm gun from the late 1960s; originally an anti-tank weapon, it is no threat to Abrams/Leopard2 , but against these Strykers and Senators, it is a crushing smoothbore sniper. At crossroads or just outside town in a low ditch with trees all around and covered in leaves, it is invisible until it fires, and 100mm is way enough to one-shot any APC or armored car. Just makes an old history nerd proud....."

Last time I saw thermite was that night they covered Bakhmut in it and it was a surreal, otherworldly spectacle. Cluster bombs and incendiaries all on a town fully occupied by Ukraine.
