I live in Dallas and a cousin of mine bought a new-construction townhouse a couple of years ago. When I went to visit her, I'm upstairs looking around and saw a half-height door in an odd place and was like "what's that?". She said, oh that leads to the roof where the AC is. I opened it and there was a little platform area built into the roof that wasn't really visible from the ground. The AC unit was there while the indoor equipment was in a little attic area between the outside and inside doors. Having lived here 20 years and been in the attic of several homes I've lived in where it was at least 125 degrees, I thought "what a great idea!" If it was the heat that got him, hopefully these new construction trends in hot areas will minimize the risk to future AC techs.
