  1. Pascal's triangle played a large role in this proof, and also shows up a lot in geometry, so I would not be surprised in the slightest. The 2^r((n-k)Cr) looks suspiciously similar to the formula 2^(n-m)(nCm) for finding the m-cubes on the boundary of an n-cube.
