  3. This is an excellent point: I'm 54 and happy as a clam! My time is my own, I travel on a whim, and i have play money. It seems that the men UNDER 40 and single think that they are missing out on some great marriage paradise, while we over 50 guys are embracing the peace and solitude!

  4. Counselor, this happened to me: I paid Pendente Lite from 2016 until the divorce finalized in 2017. Then I paid alimony for five years and child support continues because my 21yo daughter is special needs and is unable to work. But I’m happy, healthy and free!

  5. Hi Jon, great video! Here’s a quick question: if I get a prenup and get married in one state, but my spouse chooses a divorce in a different state (domicile), will that nullify the prenup? Thanks!

  6. About a year after my divorce, I told my lawyer that I got a new job. The first thing she said was, “You’d better not be making less money!” because she knew that the court (Fairfax County, VA) would NOT look favorably upon me taking a salary cut. Sheesh!

  8. I've experienced this! My ex-wife and I went to mediation and crafted a very fair agreement. She handed it to her lawyer who tore it up and we had to start from scratch. He dragged out the litigation, and in the end, my ex-wife got LESS in the new MSA than she would've gotten in our mediated settlement! But I was out of $65K in legal fees...

  16. Counselor, I appreciate YOUR free content! When I was married, I thought I was the "best version of myself" because I was superb father and provider to my family. Now post -divorce, I am still a superb father and provider, but I am an a happy journey to make myself a better, happier, fitter, and wealthier man. Life is good!

  17. When I got married in VA in 1995, all I got was a one page license. When I divorced after 22 years, I was handed an 18 page Marital Separation Agreement (MSA) that was a step by step plan for me and my ex to follow for the next five years. My fees to draft that MSA? $65K! I’m sending this video to my sons!

  20. My first divorce lawyer was a partner in a large firm. She was experienced, had a large support staff, but was EXPENSIVE AS HELL. I did not interview any other lawyers, and that cost me money. That said, she provided excellent service and a fair division of assets. My next divorce lawyer (for continuing drama with my ex-wife) is a solo practitioner with extensive experience, a skilled litigator, and well known in the courthouse. He always takes my calls and is much, much, cheaper than the lady from the big firm.

  44. In the Commonwealth of VA, I was first hit with a Pendente Lite (in the months prior to divorce). After the divorce was finalized, I was hit with Spousal Support for a term of five years (2017-22).

  45. Counsellor, I was divorced in the Commonwealth of VA in 2017. My attorney stated that I "had" to pay alimony, and I asked, "what are the Virginia laws or formula that determine alimony"? She said there are none, and so I said I won't pay any alimony then! To which she responded, :there are no laws but in VA it's accepted tradition, and if you don't agree on a sum, the court will impose alimony on you and it will be onerous." We negotiated five years of spousal support and I only have 20 months left until my emancipation!

  46. This describes my case; fortunately I'm grandafathered under the old tax laws and I get a dollar to dollar tax write-off and my AGI is fantastic! I'm ordered to pay vaginamony for five years...I've only got 19 months left!
