The name UKRAINA literally means "outskirts" it "borderland" in Russian. Because that's exactly what it was in the greater Russia. 200 years ago referring to malorussian (as the ukranians were known at the time) as a Ukrainian was an insult. It was used a same way "hillbilly" is used in the US.

Kyiv literally means "riverbank settlement" in Turkish. Ukranians language is full of Turkish words and traditional men's outfit is borrowed from Turks. Then, Russians princes conquered the region and even made it a capital at one point. Then the Mongols came murdered 90% of the men in the city of and did a bit of interacial "dating" with the ladies for 200 years. Then Lithuanian and Poles captured the region before it went back to Russia.
